cimarron-82-1.jpgEven though GM Daewoo Auto & Technology (GMDAT) builds a variety of cars to sell around the world under a number of nameplates, they only sell four models on the home market. Rivals Hyundai and Kia offer five times that many models, including luxury cars. Fearing a further drop in overseas sales, the union wants GMDAT to broaden their line to boost domestic sales. Yahoo! Singapore says the union has a solution: revamp the design of "discontinued Cadillac models" and sell them in South Korea to produce "explosive sales." The union bosses didn't suggest what models they want to drive build there. But just think– this could mean the rebirth of the Cimarron or the Catera. OK, they're talking about the DTS and STS, but I mean, c'mon, really.

    It was once fairly common for older US and European designs and tooling to be moved off to developing markets for further production. The VW bug lived on in Brazil for decades that way.

    Giving the tooling for the prior generation DTS and/or STS to Daewoo isn’t a horrible idea at all.

    I really like this idea. Then again, I’m from the land where the Morris Oxford refuses to die.

    Let’s have a reissue of the bustle-trunk’d 1980 Seville…just without the 4-6-8 or diesel powertrains, please. :-)

    I would love to have a Hindustan Ambassador (Morris Oxford) to drive. What a great time warp. I would so much rather have one than a Delorean it isn’t funny!

    Why not just ship over all the unsold Caddy BLS’s from Europe? Apparently, they have PLENTY.

    Personally, I’m waiting for them to resurrect the ’59 Coupe de Ville or 67 Eldorado with a modern powertrain and safety enhancements.

    For me, Cadillac wouldn’t even have to go back to 1967 – I’d love to get a brand new mid-90’s Cadillac Fleetwood – that model was discontinued so GM could convert the plant into making more SUV’s.

    Now they cannot give SUV’s away.

    Now the 86 Seville, on the other hand, deserved to die a hot and horrible death.

    My favorite nick name for the Cimarron when it came out was the Cava-Caddy. No one could mistake the fact it was a re-badged cavalier of the time.

    I actually like this idea. If it were up to me I would consider buying a 1995 Mercedes E300 Diesel if I could get it for around 20k.

    But unfortunately for Toyota and Daewoo, the cost differentials aren’t really as much as you would think.

    Well, Russia’s VAZ is building Sebring/Stratusized Volgas… Maybe a Daewoo-built Escalade someday? They could call it the Dae-scalade, or the Esca-woo.

    In addition to Cadillacs, the U.S. should sell McDonald’s food at a loss, plus ice cream, and tons of hydrogenated fat. We should also send them lazy boy recliners. The time has come to drown them in corn sweeteners and fat! We can then sell them diabetes drugs for very high prices.

    They are catching up to us, and we should use any weapons at our disposal. Speaking of weapons – cheap handguns. Send those over as well. And cigarettes, very cheap, to give them cancer and cost them lots of money. Just think, this could also work with the Chinese. Oh, and send them American Idol. And FOX news.

    I don’t know about Korean TV, but smokes in Korea are cheap. Crazy cheap. Cheaper than American smokes. Booze, though, is a bit more. But I digress. If smokes cost society money, I’ll eat my own ass. Cigarettes are taxed to make society money. Same as booze. Sin taxes, we call them here in the Great White North.

    Guns or ciggies or booze or whatever, I don’t care; the Koreans are in the NA car market to stay.

    Korea and some parts of East Asia do like soft-lux big cars… so this makes sense.

    actually, this strategy is quite common in korea among all the manufacturers. you still get older model japanese and even mercedes cars brand new and manufactured by hyndai, etc. some of them are pretty cool. they sell a version of the older boxy mistu montero with a diesel engine called the galloper. the older ones sport a prancing horse. you see lots of old nissan maxima and acura legend clones, too. i doubt gm would be stupid enough to rebadge the escalade, etc. in korea because gas is about three times as expensive as in the good ol’ usa.
