compass4.jpgWhen TTAC revealed its Ten Worst Automobiles Today (TWAT) awards for 2006, the Jeep Compass "won" the second slot. "A pox on their house for building the Compass," William C. Montgomery wrote in his summary. It's "an ugly, gangly, underpowered, mud-aversive half-breed… turning all who see it– or God forbid buy it– into grotesque, bobble-headed morons." China Knowledge is reporting that Chrysler is now sharing this transformational tragedy with consumers in The People's Republic of China. In fact, they plan to sell 50k of them to unsuspecting Chinese. BTW, the move was initiated long before America received tens of millions of lead-painted toys.

I just saw a Jeep commercial with a new tagline – 7 vehicles, 1 purpose. This is the GREATEST BRAND STATEMENT EVER. In the history of anything and into the future. Lexus please take note.

However, this tag was entirely false, and the Jeep Compass is the ugly little clown that is spoiling the party. It’s brother the Patriot is rather uninspired and incapable as well, but the Compass is a horrid little machine that oughtn’t be on the roads as every sale diminishes the value and focus of the Jeep brand, which due to strong branding efforts is Chrysler’s only hope of recovery.

I feel bad that the poor Chinese have to drive them, but they might be more crashworthy than some of the cars they have available. Also, it will be a good way to keep them off of American roads, stopping the hurt we all feel from this car. Blech. It’ll diminish Jeep’s standing in China, no doubt, and confuse the understanding of the brand, but what can you do?

Ironically, the Compass is the poster child for a lost sense of direction. The first one I saw in person made the hair on the back of my neck stand up; it was akin to seeing a deformed baby… Send ’em all to China so I never have to see one again.

Someone here at work has a Compass. As long as you ignore everything forward of the A-pillar it really isn’t that unattractive. The design of the front is truly execrable, however, and is irredeemably ugly.

Looks aside, the car is truly a betrayal of the brand’s promise. But given that the brand isn’t established in China to the same extent, it makes sense for Chryslerberus to hawk these things wherever they can find a willing buyer.

Of course, if they lead the Jeep charge with the Compass, they will never build the same brand purpose in China. They may not care. The average Chinese have bigger things to worry about than recreational traverses of the local Rubicon equivalent.

What do you expect from a company who’s entire identity was stolen by our government & placed in the hands of the lowest bidder.

Hardly needed. Jeep is already a household name in China, in the for of Beijing Jeep, one of the very first foreign joint ventures dating back to the early 80s, almost as far as the VAG prescence. IF they lack anything, it’s certainly not brand recognition.

Of course, the joint venture facility in Beijing now belong to ze Germans, happily cranking out C-class and E-class sedans for the Chinese market, so who knows where that leaves Chrysler – How are those Sebrings coming along?

When I saw the title of this article, I thought Hilary had finally given up on America. Maybe she’d look better in traditional Chinese face paint?
