robots.jpgIn addition to giving United Auto Workers (UAW) members a holiday for the start of deer season, GM is also offering them a lottery ticket just for showing up. MarketWatch reports that under the new labor deal, one year's perfect attendance could win a GM factory worker a brand-new car! Or, um, a part of one. The rules are pretty tough. If you're out sick,a doctor's excuse won't cut it. You have to prove you were sick by proffering a prescription slip or test results (which is a direct violation of HIPAA regulations if I'm not badly mistaken). Eligible workers are automatically entered into a drawing for $15K towards the purchase of a new GM ('Natch!) car or truck. Needless to say, the winner is liable for any taxes or other dealer charges. No word yet on a contest to see who can make the best car.

The transplants have done this for years. Rewarding your associates for perfect attendance is a win-win situation.

I hate when people come in to work sick. It should not be encouraged.

That’s because it would be embarrassing for GM to give an award to a Honda factory worker.

Amen to that! I can’t stand these people who think it is macho or cool to come in sick. They brag about it: “I came to work puking with a 105 temperature!”

    It makes me sick…literally.

You don’t have to come to work sick, as a doctor’s note for a sick day will still count as perfect attendance.
I hate when no one comes to work the monday after the superbowl because they’re “sick”.

Its not a violation of HIPAA for the employee to release his or her medical information or to authorize its release. Where I work, the company has its own medical staff as well as a separate sick leave FMLA coordinator. Any medical documentation is reviewed by the medical staff, the FMLA coordinator reviews supporting documentation.

None of this information ever gets to the workfloor or to direct supervision. They only are told whether the documentation is sufficient and whether the leave is approved or not. If the documentation is insufficient, the employee is notified and told what is needed by the FMLA coordinator.

Is the possibility of $15K for a new GM really worth it? What would that actually get you?

Well, where I live (and most likely everywhere else in the US) it would get you a full sized Chevy or GMC pickemup truck, or a Cobolt or Saturn Ion….

jeesh, I think I’d rather take days off without leave to avoid being given an Ion…..

With all the drinking they might indeed be sick the next morning.

gm does not worry about, people-humans-male or females etc, etc. they want a body, a body they want to do whatever is to be done in any spot on the line so it will run. missing someone? line cannot run. you cannot get it later or tomorrow or after you make a phone call or go get a coffee or go pee-pee. it does not work that way folks. thats why you also cannot compare auto jobs to any other work.
