bmw_5er_ttac_01_01.jpgThis is not the first rendering of the future 5er to appear on the net, But I didn’t like any of the images I’ve seen so far. I also dislike the E60. I guess all BMW fans older than five crave for a design with the beautiful simplicity and the character of the E24 6 Series… I don’t remember spending so much time on a rendering in quite a while. As a BMW fan, I felt obliged to take my time with this one and tweak it until it felt right. I tried to blend the things that first come into my mind when I think BMW, with the flame-surfacing-stuff they’re doing these days. Note the side line, tribute to the BMW 2002, and the “kidneys” that move into the future with more attitude and guts. The front lights were the tricky part. Some think that the E60 overhanging lights will or should make it onto the next 5-Series. I tried about four or five sets of those, but none of them looked right. So I felt obliged to use a conservative approach with just a little of the flame-surfacing-overhanging-stuffing. Enjoy!

    Great rendering. The E39 is still my favorite sedan of all times, design-wise (pretty much everything-wise, actually). I like your modern take on it, and I certainly hope that the “Peggy Guggenheim” headlights will be replaced and take their rightful place as worst headlights on a german car ever. Your headlights make the car look like it’s squinting at you with evil intent, which is pretty cool!

    Very nice, clean lines with a classy look. I particularly like the horizontal fold along the beltline. I would adjust the pinch in the nose a little but thats just me. 100 times better than anything the Bangel hack has come up with recently.

    Andrei, could you please become the chief designer at BMW? I think you would be doing everyone a huge favor. Now I know there is a lot of pressure associated with it, but at this point perhaps only a God could save BMW design…and I think you might just be that God!

    @AKM:

    You’re not alone on the E39. I think it’s absolutely perfectly designed in every regard.

    Mr Avavarii – Another fantastic photochop. This one might be my favorite of yours yet.

    So you predict they will fire Bangle? Seems like that would be necessary to produce a 5 series with such clean lines and sans Bangle butt.

    Sigh….I miss my E39 M5 so much….

    I was very fond of both the E34 and E39 (my favorite of the bunch was the last-of-the-line E34 540i Sport, which paired the 4.0L V-8 with the suspension and brakes of the M5). The E60 is one of the most offensively ugly cars on the road — it hurts me just to see them in traffic, which around here I do a lot. Lot of room for improvement, there.

    Well I dunno…that rendering looks more like a 3 Series from the front. With a dose of 1 Series on the sides. The all-important question remains unanswered: Bangle butt or not?

    Wow is it possible that BMW is lossing its touch? This is ugly, BMW engineers can do better then that….

    I actually like the new look that BMW has put out. The M6 is stunning.

    This comes from a guy who had a BMW 518 from -75 as his first car…
