Embargo – over. Pictures – out. And the 2008 Volkswagen Scirocco looks like… a Golf with a sleeker nose. Seriously, this is it? So they say over at Motor Authority, where these "official" pictures have been posted. It looks good, but mainly like a Golf with a sleeker nose. The rear end is somewhat different, but the back window is still about as vertical as it is on the GTI. I was expecting more of a coupe, but this is a Golf with a sleeker nose. To be frank (or Robert), without a horizontal-slatted grill and the big VW logo, it doesn't even resemble the rest of the VW lineup. Apparently, this is the beginning of a new styling direction from VW called "put a better front end on existing bodies." We'll bring you the details as they come in… and complain about them.

It looks more like a Rabbit with a sleeker nose. Or perhaps a Rabbit with a sleeker nose. Or maybe a Rabbit with a sleeker nose. Maybe even a blend of the above.
Well at least it is rwd and is significantly lighter than the GTI…
Why didn’t VW just use this model as the new Golf/Rabbit instead?
@guyincognito
Where did you get the info that it’s RWD and lighter? It’s not in the linked article.
@guyincognito:
Now the bad news. I’m pretty sure it’s FWD.
Quite possibly the best example of bollocks I’ve seen yet.
This is totally underwhelming.
The FWD was expected.
But I saw so many cool concept shots for this car! They must have gotten Toyota to add some last minute blandness.
“without a horizontal-slatted grill and the big VW logo, it doesn’t even resemble the rest of the VW lineup”
you say that like it’s a bad thing…
Yawn.
oh god… this is gonna look horrible once the tuning kids get their hands on it.
Don’t the French already make a car that looks like this one? Not sure which brand but I know it loks like one of them. I’m all for them fixing the stupid VW front they have now, kick the cross-eyed designers out of the studio.
Hey, I think its the best looking VW since… The last Scirroco!
Damning with faint praise I know… But a R32 version with AWD might be a hoot.
Peugeot
Wasn’t the first Scirocco a Rabbit with a sleeker nose?
VW design has started to wander through the proverbial Black Forest of misguidance.
It would definitely look good parked next to a WRX. So there’s that.
looks good to me – looks volvo c 30ish.
NOT an improvement over the Corrado.
Justin Berkowitz: At least it’s not a Trailblazer with the key between the seats…
Bwah ha ha ha!
VW could at least give us a little bit more of a fastback look like the original 1st gen Giugiaro-styled Scirocco, or the like the Corrado.
It’s not like the old Sirocco looked vastly different from the Golf of that time period
If I was 10 years younger (and still in 1998)I might have been touched by this design.
A great looking one!
This reminds me.
I saw a good-condition Corrado on the street awhile back, and had to observe how current the car still looks. Very nice design that was.
As for this Scirocco: it looks quite nice, but not as a Scirocco! What a letdown.
I guess VW are worried that if they make it too sleek it’ll compete with the TT.
Very disappointing, the original Scirocco Storm was a fantastic car that delivered great performance, good value and driving fun well into old age – I drove one that had around 200,000 miles on the clock.
I’d be very surprised if this one is as much fun.
Depends on how much they want for it. If they want $30k, they ain’t gonna get it, ’cause it looks like a Golf… with a sleeker nose.
Definitely looks like a rip-off of the C30. Given that VW competes with Volvo in prices and luxury aspiration, it makes sense. I’d like to see it in person, but it doesn’t rock my world.
The difference is the C30 is perceived as a unique offering in the Volvo lineup. There are only so many ways that VW/Audi can repackage the Golf before people start to become disinterested in each new variant.
Curse you VW! This car is road kill. A flattened Rabbit!
