
Last night I had the distinct, uh, pleasure of going to the Los Angeles stop of the Bullrun 2008. If you don't know, the Bullrun is an extravagant road rally where entrants pay $20k for the chance to drive around the country (and sometimes Canada) in extremely expensive machinery festooned with lots of stickers. There's also a lot of free booze, food and B-list celebs (Paris Hilton, Dennis Rodman) on hand. Despite the occasional reference to charity fund raising and carbon offsets, this event is another one of those bon vivant, not-so-PC kinda deals. As is the One Lap and the Great American Run. ABC News says "The 200 or so cars competing in the second annual race — an update of the famed Cannonball Run — will spew about as much CO2 in seven days as the average person generates in 16 years. Mention that to the drivers and they'll probably ask, 'Yeah? And?'" Me too. You? And what do YOU do for extracurricular automotive thrills?

Regarding the bullrun, I think I’ll skip anything that has b-list celebs. I really don’t want to meet the likes of Paris Hilton. But I’d love to drive around the USA, and may do it in the fall if I can peel six weeks. Haven’t crossed the country by surface since I bicycled Seattle to Boston in ’75. But I grew up xing the country with family of origin. Long long long overdue.
yep. Since ’03 I have attended 5erFest, a meeting of BMW E-28 and E 12 owners. This yr, E34s were allowed in too. This event has been held on an annual basis since ’02. Every yr, a different host city is chosen. A hotel with an adjacent parking garage is found. Some BMW related venue is lined up for a show and sometimes an autocross. Pictures are taken, parts are swapped, beer and other potables are consumed into the wee small hours. Cars are ogled, cars that limp in are fixed. Friendships are made and re-newed.
I havent made the trek to the 2 west coast events. But in ’03 I won worst of show in Banner Elk, NC, In ’05 at Greenville SC, I won WOS in my son’s beater. In ’06, a purpose built beater stole the title from me in South Bend IN. In ’07 at Chattanooga TN the title was snagged by a 535i hand painted in Rustoleum Blue with a blackboard painted hood.
My cars are daily driver beaters. But There are also M5s, M535is. Alpinas and Hartges. Beautiful and rare tuner cars. There are only about a dozen E12 M535is left in the US. 6 of them were at Chattanooga.
Because this yrs 5er Fest was in Reno, I opted for a classic bimmer meet in Winston -Salem NC. Plenty of the faithful were in attendance. In addition, there is a get together in Toronto, I will be at over the 4th. Lime Rock over Labor Day and the Bav Auto Show and Shine in early OCT
Yes, MOTD (MINI’s On The Dragon). Also a couple of autocross and track events a year for fun and driving skills.
It was autocross, but when gas hit $2.25/gallon I stopped going to Tucson (about an hour away) for their events. And, around $3/gallon I lost interest in doing it locally (and I was winning overall, or at least winning my class so it didn’t matter anymore) and with knee issues, traded in the WRX for a Honda Fit with automatic.
A friend of mine wants me to get back into it, and is offering his SM2-class Miata for me to co-drive. I think I’ll give it a go for a few events and see how it goes.
I showed my Jeep last year at a 4-Wheel Jamboree: (www.familyevents.com). Plus I stand to inherit a classic muscle car for show, which I am looking forward to!
Vintage car shows/cruise-ins when I have time…not so much lately. If I had more time and money, I’d auto-x. Went to the Ypsilanti Orphan car show earlier in the month, it was great. I love odd iron.
Speaking of odd cars, do I get bonus points for calling Spyker on the interior shot heading the post?
Autocross in a 1993 MR2 fully prepped for E-Stock. Fun, cheap, good people to hang around with.
Oh yeah. I do several vintage and sports car rallies every year, at least one major old car tour, and a handful of shows, autocross, and whatnot. I’d NEVER do a “Bullrun” because I have less money and more sense, but I did join Brock Yates & Martin Swig for the 1999 Cannonball Classic. Boy, was that fun! No celebrities, no stupidity, just car guys and great machines.
I’ve also run: The New England 1000, The Colorado Grand, La Carrera Nevada, The Forza Mille, The Forza Amelia, The Mille Autunno, The Classic Motorcar Rally, The Monte Shelton Northwest Classic Rally, and the Going To The Sun Rally to name a few. Some are competitive, others are just casual tours, all are fun and enjoyable. Essentially a car-themed vacation.

I collect counties. It’s my goal to visit all 3,141 counties in the United States. So far I’ve been to just over 600. Plenty of road trips. If I get that Miata I’ve been threatening to buy, I may link up with the nearest Miata club too.
I took the Alero to the Oldsmobile Homecoming in Lansing a couple of weeks ago. I had a blast! Turns out that my car was the newest one there, as mine was built one month before the last one rolled off the line, and one of the guys that had a Final 500 edition couldn’t make it.
In addition to that I love traveling to auto museums. I’ve done the Henry Ford in Dearborn, the A-C-D in Auburn, IN, The RE Olds Transportation Museum in Lansing, and this year alone I took in the Walter P. Chrysler Museum in Auburn Hills and the World’s oldest Hudson dealer, which is now the Ypsilanti Automotive Heritage Museum.
So for me, it’s a combination of museums, collecting tons of memorabilia and taking pictures of cars that does it for me.

In my book, Paris is more like a Zzzz-list celeb. She bores me to sleep.
I try to drive other peoples cars when ever I can. Also observe my driving and my cars handling and responses so I can become a better driver. Oh and I do reading.
I went to the Nurburgring-Nordeschleife and had buckets of fun there.
I intend to go back soon. It doesn’t matter what car you drive (Yaris, Hybrid, Audi TT, etc) the feeling of taking on the world’s most dangerous race track and winning is a great one!
I sincerely recommened it.

I take my Jeep KJ onto logging trails and access roads to get good vantage points for rail and truck fanning photography.

Every thursday is local Mazda meet. First tuesday of every month is the RX7Club meet (and our cruise is usually a mini cannonball). DI meets occasionally. All meets consist of chilling around the cars for about an hour followed by a cruise and or racing that’ll last till about 2-3 in the morning. I don’t go to ricekiller meets, though. Those guys suck.
Last weekend drove the 64 Impala up to Minneapolis for the Back to the Fifties car show at the state fairgrounds.(64 and earlier allowed) Went with 5 other cars, all street rods. We had a great time, along with the other 11,500 cars owners.
I try to get my car and motorcycle out on the track a few times a year. At 60 I’m resolved that I’ll never have a racing career, but I’m convinced that the majority of automobiles and motorcycles on the market are far more capable than their drivers. There is nothing like some track time to learn a few new skills and be humbled by the ability of your car or motorcycle; we live in a golden age of machinery.
At other times, you might find me dispensing with digital enemies in Call of Duty 4, or running laps around Spa with GTR2.
Work on my house (always something to do) and read TTAC. Maybe someday I’ll go to TDI Fest, but I haven’t gone yet.

Nothing like testing your true love of sportbikes like doing a couple hundred miles per day.
I read car blogs about celebs with giant carbon footprints and fantasize that it’s me hanging out with B-listers and emitting indecent levels of CO2.
I work on my car, upgrades and maintenance, go to meets, and starting just last week I’ve begun Auto X and will be going to a HPDE in a couple of weeks. I also surf the forums and TTAC. I use the 10% of my free time not dedicated to cars to cook, drink/collect wine, and train in mixed martial arts.
