While the official debut at the Paris Auto Show isn’t set to take place for a few days, yada yada yada, photos of the X1 are now available on the internet. I think it looks like a modern BMW crossover thingy, which means it looks awful (reference X3, X5, X6). It looks dangerously close to the out-of-date X3 in size, and the platform is some kind of 1-Series/3-Series crossbreed, meaning it can likely accept every engine those two cars offer. Unfortunately, it’s likely that the production X1 will look a lot like this. Worst part: the name reminds me of the awesome Bell X-1, the plane that broke the sound barrier.

I like the fwoosh that goes all the way to the tail-light; the jarring loneliness of it could be seen as a work of art in itself. Otherwise it has a profile kind of similar to the infiniti crossover.
If North America gets this instead of the 1-Series hatch, someone’s gonna die.
I’d also expect the Mercedes ALK-Class and Audi Q1 shortly. Can’t leave a niche unexploited, you know, no matter how infinitesimally small and/or completely undifferentiated.
Instead of this stupid crossover, can I have the 5-door 1-series? I’d jump all over a 130i 5-door.
This isn’t nearly as bad as the X6, but if it’s as big as it looks it’s going to cannibalize the X3, as the post hints (maybe they’ll give it a crappy interior and high price like the 1-series).

North America gets it; you’re just in the wrong North American country.
Oh… Dear… God…
So BMW wants to compete with itself (X3, 3-wagon) by spending (hundreds of?) millions to create a jacked up 1 series hatch. I really do want to know how much, if any, second-guessing there was in creating this thing, or if the execs all thought it was an excellent idea. No, really, I want to know.
I do not like the mug, the other stuff I like ok. I’m still scared of flipping over in an suv.
Of course it’s going to be really expensive. It’s meant to be expensive so it’s “desirable” and stuff. Not to mention the smooshed in face is really ugly. I bet it’s because of pedestrian safety laws. Lame!
What’s this one going to be called? A Sports Activity Hatchback?
I’m beginning to think “crossover” just means their model lines crossing each others’ paths as far as intended audience. Somehow, despite the existence of the X3 and X5, I still see 3 and 5-series wagons.

There. Fixed it for you.
As for the X1, that is retina-poppingly hideous. Coming soon to an expensive gym near you.
It’s like a BMW version of the Sssanyong Rodius
Ssanyong Rodius called, he wants his ugly back.

That’s what I thought when I saw it, too. Reminds me of Infiniti FX with slightly longer/boxier front and a BMW grille.
Sad Panda!

+1
Ugly.
A pregnant BMW what will they think of next. What is with that ugly mustard color, are we going back to the 70’s.
This must be the platform sharing with the MINI cooper CUV that makes my stomach churn.
The over/under is 4000 lbs.
Oh, rapture! I thought this day would never come!! Just what the auto world needs right now…Another overpriced teutonic CUV. Not.
It does look dangerously close to the X3 in size, but then again, so did the X3 when it first debuted when compared to the 1st gen X5. Don’t know what BMW has planned for the X3 since there’s only so much it can grow without impacting the X5.
Good thing is that BMW may be reconsidering offering the X1 in North America due to the Euro-dollar rate.
I’m guessing the entire purpose of this atrocity is so that BMW dealers can truthfully discribe the X6 as “not the ugliest vehicle in the world…”

It may be that the X5 will grow in size to match the GLK. Or they could add an X7 “sports tourer” because it’s surprising the R-Class has been uncontested for this long.
Where are these misguided people taking the brand? I can’t stop yawning at these SAVs – all of ’em!
Does anyone else see a whole mess o’ Nissan Rouge past the A-Pillar?
