And so ends another week in the autoblogosphere. Of course, the fact that I just wrote that virtually guarantees some gi-normous auto-related story is about to break. (Lest we forget, GM always dumps its worst news into the ether on a Friday afternoon, giving the Wall Street Money Men sufficient time to commit Domicide on a few million brain cells.) I apologize for not posting the three finalists’ entries for the Muscle Car writing contest last week. My best laid plans have gone awry, overtaken by the scale, scope, severity and speed of recent events. I’ll put the unedited rants up this weekend. Meanwhile, I appreciate our entrants’ patience. And your patronage. While I enjoyed writing for TTAC before we had readers or commentators, I get a huge kick out of editing our most excellent contributors’ material and reading the Best and Brightest’s take on all things automotive. The TTAC team’s fought hard to get where we are today. We will continue to maintain our standards of writing, integrity and vitriol during these strange ass days. We’ll will continue to do everything we can to deserve your valuable time, and invaluable trust.

Robert, I had 400-odd words drafted for that contest, and just ran out of time and steam.

So with that in mind, I look forward to reading the 3 finalists.

What is with Justin hating inline 5’s. I really thing the idea isn’t bad when it isn’t designed by bone headed auto companies, yes I’m talking about you GM and VW. Volvo makes some really great inline 5’s especially that 2.3L turbo. I really enjoyed that S70 I test drove with it. As well as my Mercedes 300D, great engine. I really miss that car. Audi as you mentioned had some good ones and even Honda made one for a while.

Sure they can be a little uneven at the low end of the rev range, but who likes driving there, keep it in the meat where the torque is and they are pretty smooth. I guess I am a sucker for unusual engineering that breaks from the norm. But it’s a practical design with merits, if it wasn’t it would have gone the way of the straight-8.

I do agree thought the VW 5 is one of the worst engines I have ever tried to plow a field with. My diesel 5 was smoother and less noisy than that VW tractor motor.

When I think about muscle cars the older Skylines and Supras and the Viper come to mind. Power with control. Muscle is implemented in a racy, technical, smart and sporty way.

About loans for only those that can afford it, consider that a lot of positives have developed, like peoples standard of living has gone up and jobs have been kept and economy grown. It may go down now, still a lot of stuff got started. With some better balancing this may have been avoided perhaps.
