I went from New York to Pittsburgh, PA for a wedding last weekend. Rather than ride in my cramped car with two college buddies of much greater stature (and girth), we departed for the Iron City in a 160,000 mile Honda CR-V. I was just shocked at how pleasant it was for a road trip (albeit a very short 6 hour one). The amount of interior space – especially that afforded by the high roof, was fantastic. While the back seat probably wouldn’t have seated 2 all that well, it was fine for two people to stretch out their legs, and the same went for the cavernous front passenger seat. While it was a little short on amenities (no front passenger armrest, for example), it was a comfortable and mostly quiet highway cruiser. With only 44 horsepower underhood, we even managed MPGs into the mid 20s. What’s not to like? It drives like crap. But hey, I was just riding. In related news, Jonny and I discuss Ferraris.

    Did you mean 144 hp?

No, I meant 44. Ever driven one? I tracked our zero to sixty time with a telescope at night…

44 HP good God that is only 18 more horse than my 380 pound motorcycle. How do you track time with a telescope?

With 160k and original spark plugs, 44HP isn’t out of the question…

    There’s a cruise and then there’s cruising.
Justin, by that I mean to say one trip will not make a travlin man/car.
Take it from me…I drive 6 hours each way between the Chic subs to southern MO…2 times a month!!
Many cars “seemed” like the car for this duty…only to fail me miserably.
You don’t really realize it until the second or third trip.
THEN, suddenly the seat lumbar support isn’t really as you thought and the shots of pain going down your leg begin to kill you.
The wind noise and the tire noise that didn’t seem to be there on earlier trips now drive you to madness.
The once comfortable back seat with once good rear leg room now has your 6 foot son putting his feet over your seat back and bitchin about the rotten seats.

Is it me or are all teen agers over 6 feet today?

The point is, don’t recommend this small SUV for travelin duties until you can bet your life on it.
If it’s anything like the Rav4…forget it.
    Been there, done that.
My opinion…stick with a car, preferably one with a good ol’ Detroit ride.

With 44 horsepowers you wound’t be able to go beyond second gear with this ugly Land Rover Freelander copy.

The original 2.0 liter engine had 126 hp.

Talbot might have been a higher-end brand once way back when, but it ended pretty shabby selling cars made by (if I’m not completely mistaken on this one) British Leyland in the 80s.

    Talbot Sunbeam

I think it then too was like a budget Peugeot…

I’m embarking upon a cross country journey of epic proportions next week. My wife and I are attempting a Seattle-Atlanta-Seattle barnstorming tour in a 2004 Mazda3 hatchback.
