Automotive News [sub] reports that GM is beginning its promised cutback in contract workers. “We are in the process of advising several temporary agencies that we are continuing to eliminate some contract jobs,” GM spokesman Dan Flores told Automotive News. He declined to say how many workers or the GM sites that are affected.” TTAC can fill in at least one of the blanks. A reader informs us that there are around 500 contract designers on staff at GM’s Warren, MI Tech Center. Approximately four-hundred got the axe. Friday is their last day. He also tells us that the remaining 100 workers will be gone by year’s end. Where does this leave GM’s hybrid design team? China. [thanks to you-know-who-you-are]

    Hmmmm, think your source meant to say engineers and sculptors.

    GM HR is trying to force departments to layoff its contract employees, even though they are good workers. Then HR wants this department to fill these positions with GM direct undesireables from another department. Why doesn’t HR just get rid of the undesireables? They probably cost the company more and don’t work as hard as the contract employees. Plus they have to be retrained. Why is HR afraid to layoff GM salaried workers if they are useless?

    Any huge corporation hasn’t the accountability necessary to track poor performance and flush it. Otherwise the upper echelons would be empty.

    Being both contract employee and GM employee depending on the time frame in the last 30 years.

    The need to say that one or the other is undesirable or lazy is not worthy of you or them.

    The problem lies in middle management mostly not understanding how to complete a project in the most cost effective means while still maintaining style, immeidiate quality and long term reliability.

    The premature release of the CVT is an example of upper management stupidity and middle management inability to express the stupidity of releasing a product the project engineers stated was not road ready.
