GM Inside News (GMI) is reporting that the next gen Cadillac SRX– an “all new” badge-engineered Saturn Vue if there ever was one (was there?)– and the new Chevy Equinox– a fuel-cell powered CUV if there never was one (was there?)– will both be blessed with GM’s new 3.0-liter direct-injected High-Feature V6. And what’s one of them, you ask? GMI reckons its a 250hp, uh, engine. Although our good friends over at Autoblog are happy to disregard GMI’s info-strictures (“Those were RUMORS though and they are very old rumors”), they’re happy to peg the new motor’s mileage at just under 30mpg (highway?). Should GM make it to that most magical of model years (2010), the Caddy CUV will also have a larger engine option (the CTS’ 3.6-liter V6, not a V8) and the Equinox will have a more CAFE-compliant po-folks 2.3-liter four, good for… moving the CUV from place to place.

The 2.3 raises a small question mark, only because as far as I know GM’s current 4-cylinder lineup is made up of 2.0, 2.2, and 2.4 liter engines.
Wooooweee, 250 hp from 3.0L. Those wily engineers at GM are almost up to modern levels of power to displacement. Almost.
JEC:
Really. I’m not trying to be a smart ass, but what are other mainsteam makers naturally aspirated 3.0 ltr. engines making? 250hp sounds respectable.
Just wondering.
Any further details on the 3.0? All-new, or derived from the existing 2.8 and 3.6?
Does this mean that the Saturn Vue, Saab 9-4, Chevy Equinox, Pontiac Torrent (G7? G9?) and inevitable Buick and GMC variants will get the same engine?
It’s derived from the current 3.6L.
“High-feature” probably means DOHC and four valves per cylinder, possibly with (gasp) direct ignition and variable valve timing, things that GM still considers bleeding-edge technology.
1.) Is this new engine vaporware like the Volt or does it actually exist?
2.) Who cares? Will it make the vehicles in question better vehicles? Increase their resale value? Save GM?
GM Inside News is just putting out anything to get non-TTAC readers into the showrooms. TTAC readers know better.
What ever happened to the China sourced V6 engine for the Equinox! Decided it didnt fit anymore?
This may be it, Geo Levecque.
1169 – This is the first American motor that makes respectable naturally aspirated hp per litre. It’s been a long time coming, when everyone else around the world has had this kind of hp/litre for years. It doesn’t excuse the plethora of underpowered and oversized mills that the big three have been foisting on the public, particularly their sixes (Ford can’t squeeze more than 200 hp from 4.0L in the Mustang?). Even the V8s, while not bad engines, are hardly impressive for their power figures when you compare power to displacement. We broke the 100hp/litre mark many years ago, the American auto makers are still playing catchup.
JEC:
10-4 on all of that.
I’d like to see the aforementioned 3.0 ltr. placed in the Malibu with a proper six speed manual. I’m probably in dream land though. This is of course if GM exists long enough to make a progressive decision like that.

Who cares about hp/L, it’s all about hp/cam!
I hope Pontiac, GMC and Buick will get versions of this. I’d hate to see them suffering for lack of first-class badge-engineered product.
The 3.0L V6 in my Stealth made at the end of 1990 makes 222hp. It took 18 years to get 30 more hp?
