Ray Wert, of “A GM-Chrysler merger makes good financial sense” fame has announced that via CafePress, Jalopnik is selling “Save GM” t-shirts. Even if it’s meant ironically, I find this so blindingly stupid that I’m commentless. Help yourselves.

Shouldn’t it be:
“My taxes paid for the Detroit bailout, and all I got was this lousy T-shirt.” ???
Do they come in “Yukon XL” sizes?
TTAC ought to have American Leyland T-shirts.
First they want your tax dollars as bailout money, next they’ll want the shirt of your back.
Justin,
It’s not merely ironic. “Save the…” is a Jalopnik meme, starting with “Save the Enzos” because of all the idiots who have managed to wreck cars that adhere to the road like white on rice.
I’ll stick with German cars thank you.
Bozoer Rebbe:
I know that Jalopnik has used the “save the…” theme for some time.
The thing is, those *are* ironic. It’s a riff on “Save the whales!” or “Save the environment!” as if inanimate objects could go extinct.
Sounds Creative
Last I heard TTAC needed some revenue.
How about FIRE RICK WAGONER!
I do like the – “all I got was this lousy t-shirt” idea – we should make some!
Gawker media is very into the t-Shirt whoring, but this is a new low.
I propose that TTAC make a t-shirt that looks the same above the GM logo, but below the GM logo either says “With Ch. 11 Bankruptcy”, “From Rick Wagoner” or “From the Government”.
Jalopnik would sell any shred of credibility they have…oh, wait.
So does GM get a cut? It does not say. If they get a cut, oh, say a dollar a shirt to go to GM, so at 2 billion $ a month of bleeding to stop, so lets see 300 million of us in USA so um each person needs to buy 7 shirts a month to keep GM ticking along making cars I wont buy. Thats pretax too, so make it 10 a month.
Not looking good. When GM declares CH11, it will be a shock to market.
We should make a TTAC store.
You can sell stuff like:
1. T-shirts that have stuff like the American Leyland logo, or say, “I paid for the great Detroit bailout and all I got was this lousy T-shirt”. Yeah, you can easily find out where I got those captions.
2. Bobbleheads of all the Detroit execs.
3. A Rick Wagoner voodoo doll.
4. Literature, such as the first 200 GM Death Watches in a hardcover. Or a hardcover that contains all of RF’s favorite B&B insight, etc.
5. A picture frame full of fictional “Lutz Buckz”. (Don’t know what those are, read the comments section of new story “The Mind Boggles”)
6. A daily 2009 calender in which each day contains an idiotic quote from Bob Lutz.
7. Bumper stickers that say “Thanks to Rick Wagoner, I am a jobless divorcée” or “My car is red – just like GM’s balance sheet!”
8. The film “Roger & Me” on DVD.
And more, all at the TTAC store!
Your relentless antagonizing of other automotive blogs sure flies in the face of your purported “journalistic credibility.” I read Jalopnik to be entertained and this site to keep informed, but I’ve grown so sick of the attacks on other blogs and reaching criticisms of GM that it’s barely worth reading anymore.
TTAC @ Cafepress
The last time I bought something with a GM logo, it broke down.
Flying Spaghetti Monster forbid they get into the trouser racket.
If you’re going to buy one, don’t forget to Look For the Union Label.
@ Old Guy Ben:
It’s not nice to make people snort their tea up their noses, y’know.
The simple way to save GM is to buy a car (or two) from them. That’s what I did. I don’t wear T-shirts with logos, but I don’t mind driving iron labeled as such.
Dollars, not gestures, folks.
Phil
Bravo, kid cassady.
Lighten up, TTAC.
“Love it. Purchased and thank you. I might drop a couple twenties on GM stock while I’m on the computer. Why wouldn’t I? The worst thing that could happen is that I lose two twenties I would’ve smoked anyways.”
This comment from the Jalop thread really says it all, no?
Also, Wert is saying the proceeds will go to “a check for GM.” Irony strikes again? Who can tell anymore…
Speaking of TTAC @ Cafepress,
The bumper sticker that reads:
VINCIT OMNIA VERITAS
TRUTHABOUTCARS.COM
truthaboutcars.com does not redirect to thetruthaboutcars.com. Should the bumper sticker be changed?
edit: poor HTML editing.
GM logo, and underneath it ….”WE GOT RICK ROLLED !”.
GM logo, and underneath it ….”WE GOT RICK ROLLED !”.
I’d buy that for a dollar. ^_^

They’re already getting my dollars. My tax dollars, at the point of a gun. Please, I don’t want their product, too…what’re they trying to do, kill me? Hell, they should just use that gun and shoot me!
The T-Shirt is supposed to be ironic, at least that is how I see it.
Chill out.
GM logo, and underneath it ….”WE GOT RICK ROLLED !”.
Oh, I’d pay big money for that. We need a graphic designer to make us some TTAC-worthy T-shirts.
well said kid cassady.
While I love TTAC, I’ve also grown tired of its nonsensical attacks on other blogs. Stay classy TTAC!
I gots to say that Jalopnik has been in a bit of a funk since Lieberman defected over here, or was forced to defect. Murilee Martin is a great writer and I enjoy his stuff but otherwise it has gotten a bit one dimensional and at times rednecky. I left a comment once saying the blog had gone downhill and got an angry reply from Wert himself. Meow.
Anyway, they seem to be whoring pretty large for the big 3 with endless posts about the new Mustang and whatnot.
As for the shirts, yawn. GM can suck it. They killed themselves with idiotic product choices. It might do good to thin the herd some.
So TTAC takes shots at other blogs – what is wrong with that? I read other blogs and have my own opinions just as the writers here on this board too. Honestly the other blogs and their readers also take their shots at TTAC too. It’s all fun in games so don’t take the knocks too seriously…as in the end (pun intended) it’s only a bunch of crap written on the Internet anyway.
ROFL. I should get one and wear it to Scion meets!
My “CHEVROLET: BUILT TO LAST” shirt is starting to wear out. Now that I think about it, just like my Chevy did.
Love the article…since I wouldn’t have cause to visit Jalopnik.com unless I was on a scavenger hunt.
I’d buy some ttac gear if it was funny & well designed.
Speaking of which…if TTAC needs a source for wholesale clothing/printing my brother has some pretty good contacts. Drop me a line g.dawg1 at gmail dot com
I’m up for taking a crack at designing some TTAC swag, let me know!
Oh, but for the record, I enjoy Jalopnik too. Some of the comments can get crude, but the writing can be very funny.
Considering there may be federal-aide for GM after Obama starts, we’ll all be supporting GM whether we want to or not.
I’ve got another one:
GM logo, and underneath it ……..”An American Devolution”.
To those who got the irony in the shirts, I salute you for your intelligence and sense of humor.
To those who did not, better luck next time.
Also, I’d like to point out two among the editorial staff here have already purchased a t-shirt. Just sayin’…
RayWert :
And to those of you who slagged-off TTAC for predicting this mess, and suggested that GM should merge with Chrysler, I salute you too. Only perhaps not using as many fingers.
Robert Farago: When did I slag you off?
RayWert :
New York Auto Show. As Loudon Wainwright the III said, never underestimate the power of an arched eyebrow.
If Jalop’s editorial position offered more ironic counterpoint to the absurdity of these shirts, I’d consider myself saluted.
Maybe it’s time to go out and “ironically” buy a Pontiac G3. That way I can illustrate the irony inherent in supporting GM, while not looking quite as toolish as the dude in the “Save GM” shirt.
That having been said, I would be surprised and a little disappointed if Jalopnik suddenly made sense all the time.
