Knowing Jonny would be interested, I rushed pricing for the 415-horsepower Pontiac G8 GXP into TrueDelta’s database, so you can now configure one here on TTAC as well. [To my knowledge, there’s nowhere else you can already configure a G8 GXP.] Base price is $39,995 after destination and the gas guzzler tax–the EPA ratings of 13/20 are almost identical to those for an SRT8. This is what happens when you delete the GT’s “active cylinder management.” The only options are $695 if you want the manual (not available at any price on an SRT8 sedan) and $900 for a sunroof. Bluetooth has been added to 2009 G8s, but if you want nav you’re still SOL. This pricing puts the GXP about $1,700 below a Dodge Charger SRT8 at MSRP. At invoice–what you’ll more likely be paying–the difference is a smidge over $1,000. The premium over the 361-horsepower GT? About $6,500 even after adding leather seats to the latter (they’re standard on the GXP). And that’s before including the $1,500 rebate on the GT. No word yet on whether the GXP will get the same rebate right out of the gate. But seeing as the GXP can’t be worth $8,000 more than the GT, a rebate at least this large seems almost certain.

Why, why. . why? Do these manufacturers continue to put out over priced crap. Another sub 70hp/L POS of an engine for $40K???! You could buy an ’05 BMW M3 coupe for that, with warranty and have a superior car that’s only three years old. Are there any morons buying these tings?? No wonder these mental midgets are going under. Seriously, they should stick to making rental cars.

Just one week ago, this thread was posted:

    https://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/floor-continues-to-fall-on-used-pontiac-g8-prices/

In light of this information, who’s going to run out and drop $40 large on this vehicle in this economy? Just buy a dirt cheap G8 GT (or even two of them at the going rate) and spend your leftover cash modding it for the extra 50 horses. De-badge it and put the Holden front end on it just for grins.

Which means in a month or two you will see special “value” pricing on it for $24999

Did you seriously just use the hp/L argument?

    Really?

I thought we were past this.

    @06M3S54B32:

Ah yes, the infamous hp/L attack. The bread and butter used by fans of torque-less engines (see Honda, BMW).

Sarcasm aside, I love the S54 as much as anyone but it’s a totally different monster compared to the LS3. No one will pay over $30k for a GXP out the door and it will be an amazing bargain.

You guys have no idea you have it. I would love to buy this. My Mazda3 1.6 cost $45,000 U.S in my country. Try that on for size.

I wouldn’t call any modern BMW engine “torque-less”. I’ve driven most of the current line-up and they feel plenty strong.

Michael, Thanks for the update on this. I hope this means that we’ll have a chance to see this before GM is shot and sent to the Russian front.

M316> Is that bad? Last I checked in a local car rag in my in-laws country a bmw-328 , until recently (dollar gaining), was about $140K US. Yeap, you read that right. Civic SI was about $60KUS. Hah. At todays exchange the civic si is about down to $43-$44k.

If you search around on the brazil bmw website & search for used 335’is, the cheapest is 220.000,00 brazillian Reais!

At todays exchange rate, that is about $91k

“The bread and butter used by fans of torque-less engines (see Honda, BMW).”

Only in the land of red light to red light racers does this apply. My “torque less” M3 coupe can hit 0-60 in 4.7. . hummmm. .maybe it’s the gearing? American’s will always make garbage until they go bankrupt.

Robstar, this is because the Brazilian government places heavy duties on any imported car (or electronic device, or anything imported really). The Brazilian government gives the Brazilian people the dual whammy of protectionist tarrifs and high taxes. It still makes me wonder how anyone can afford a car in Brazil. Personally, I hope for a revolution to oust those corrupt bastards….

Its still a Holden – which is still a Vauxhall – which is still a Opel (the cheapest nastiest car German car)

Its still a 1 star car with 0 star handling

Has anyone here ragging on the G8 ever DRIVEN one? The thing is brilliant. No fancy 12-setting transmission and 7-setting traction control, just a big comfortable 4-door sedan with excellent power and driving dynamics. You can’t bash GM for making crap cars, then bash them for finally making a good one. Be a little consistent, at least.

The G8 is the type of car Pontiac always needed but never had. Rather than being a home for Chevy’s with lipstick, it should be a low-volume performance brand full of cars exactly like the G8.

I absolutely can’t wait to see the abysmal sales numbers for this thing. Again, if they want to actually sell cars, stick to the familiar ones we drive at Avis or Hurtz.

$40K for a Pontiac causes me a bit of a cardiac moment. Even if Pontiac didn’t have a “Do Not Resuscitate” tag, that would be a stretch. (Yes, I know the C300 SRT8 can top that mark. That causes a lurch, too.)

I know Jonny loves the G8, but it’s a hard sell for me. The idea of a kind of K-Mart version of the E39 M5 is not totally without merit, but the G8 is pretty low on gotta-have-it vibe. Perhaps it’s because it’s horrendously ugly inside and out — vulgar is the word I would choose.

I figure it will be $20K after a year.

Wrong on two counts Still a Holden, Correct.
Still a Vauxhall, wrong, exported to the UK as a Vauxahll, Still an Opel, definitely wrong as the Opel connection was lost when Opel dumped the Senator & Rekord platform years ago. The only German connection is the Bitter variations built from exported cars. You could have also connected Chevrolet as well (Middle East and South Africa) as to being “still a 1 star car with 0 star handling” considering the marshmallow handling of a typical American sedan this is a complement!

Soon the failed G8 will be forever gone from the US market.

As an Australian I’m happy to defend the G8.

I can’t comment on the ownership experience, but it’s a remarkable effort from a small design group here in Australia.

I have however driven them for more than a few days at a time as my brother-in-law has nothing but these models. It handles extremely well, it’s powerful and it’s well made not just by GM standards. I know people who say it’s better than a CTS.

I personally think they made a mistake by not making it a fair bit smaller and of course taking the opportunity to make it more fuel efficient compared to the outgoing model. Holden have been heavily criticised in Australia for that, but they have the bigger is better marketing mentality from GM unfortunately.

There were even calls for a diesel version, which would probably sell reasonably well in Australia.

I like the way it looks, especially the HSV versions. I really dislike the Pontiac front end. The Holden treatment suits it much better.

Other than that, it has the usual stigma of very poor resale values, but GM owners would be used to that.

Another sub 70hp/L POS of an engine …

The LS3 is not even remotely a POS. Lots of power, great torque, long life, reliable, and reasonably cheap. Seems to me that somebody nailed the sweet spot on this one. About those shoddy interior door panels in the G8, though…

This car is probably GMNA’s swan song. It’s a damn good one, to, which makes it doubly sad.

Whem GM really, really wants to, they can turn out amazing products. Toyota, by comparison, can turn out something rock-reliable and reasonably capable, but can’t quite make it. GM’s problem is that Toyota gets a solid A-/B+ across the line; GM pulls a few A+ (this, the Vette, the CTS) but more than it’s fair share of D- (Aveo, 9-7) and C+ (Cobalt) cars.

Probably true right this minute, but I’d say to you; Celica GT4, the last generation Supra and of course Lexus LS. The Landcruiser also seems to have owned it’s segment in many markets.

Toyota have always been an incremental company (except for Lexus LS) rather than revolutionary (except for Hybrid).

The problem with this car is that guys who want a high performance 4 door and have money are like 06m3s5234823r095; regardless of the Pontiac’s capabilities, they will turn their nose up at it. They’d rather have the stigma of driving an M-car over that of driving a Pontiac. Eww, a Pontiac! My Nitro R/C car makes way more hp/l than that thing!

The good news is the real performance junkies will be able to get into the car at a discount. Too bad for GM.

“They’d rather have the stigma of driving an M-car over that of driving a Pontiac.”

No “stigma” of driving an M car, as I can proudly drive with my windows down, which I couldn’t say about this hideous eye-sore. I’d literally rather take public transportation than drive a Pontiac
. The fact is, asking $40k for for something that will be worth 50% less in one year, has gaping body panels, smells of glue and plastic, and looks like it was designed by Stevie Wonder with a hangover, is not going to sell to people who are not on medication. If they were asking $25k I could get it.
