A British eBayer, selling a rather unusual car for the UK, describes one of the many flaws of his Ford Thunderbird 3.8:

SIDE WINDOW SMASHED DUE TO SOMEONE SMASHED IT.

Winner.

    Those Brits have really got to learn to speak English properly.

    Strange, the license plate looks American and I’m not aware that this car was ever sold in Europe.

    @tom:

    It was probably imported from the States. There are a fair number of silly American cars on the roads in the UK. I recently saw a new Dodge Ram with the giant HEMI lettering. Fit right in with the quaint countryside in Oxfordshire.

    There was a mass influx of American cars to foreign lands when the dollar was weak. Betcha that T-bird was picked up at auction for nothing, making its way to the UK for less than $3000.

    Most likely a G.I. may have taken it over and sold it prior to leaving.

    Given that the steering wheel is on the left side of the car, it’s definitely an import…probably from a GI as Loser said.

    Still strange that it has an American license plate. I don’t know how it is in Britain (are there any US soldiers at all?) but in Germany, you don’t see any US license plates anymore. It’s been at least a decade since GI’s got special NATO license plates…I’d think that this is the same for all Europe.

    So either this car has just recently been imported (which begs the question as to why anyone would do that), or it hasn’t been used in years.

    yeah that would be an Arizona license plate (old school one) but not very Arizona-esque surroundings

    I don’t care how cheap it is, why would anyone with any morsel of brain power want a crap car like that in the UK, even if it was back when that thing was new? What an awful car (and yes, I’ve driven them).

    I’d pay the starting bid of 300 pounds but only if he delivers the car to me.

    When I was in Hungary I met some local kids there that drooled over monster sized American SUV’s. They would’ve liked nothing better than to own a suburban or one ton pickup. Guess if it’s “rare” it’s cool. Same goes for some really less than stellar imports from Europe over in the States.

    My guess is that even a crappy t-bird could find a group of fanboys in England.

    Yes, no more NATO plates but the GI’s must get British plates. I would guess if the car came over with a GI he may have given the AZ plates to the new owner or the present owner thought it would help it to sell with a US plate on it. While overseas I was surprised how many people love old American cars and will go to great lengths to make them look like they are still in the US, similar to what the ricer guy’s do here in the US to Japanese cars. Many of the guy’s I work with will leave a front British, German or Japanese plate on their cars after they return from overseas. No front plate is required here in SC.

    What if the owner put the American plate on it just to look cool? Left it alongside the British plate on the front, like so many people do here in the US with their Audis and BMWs.

    I came across a Chrysler K car in Scotland recently and as I had never seen one before it was fascinating, for about 3 minutes. Similiar reaction to a Chevrolet Cavalier in Fort William that had a snout so sharp it looked like it was designed to cut people off at the knees. Maybe its those brothel red velour interiors that does it. Why bother with a brothel when you can kerb crawl in your own.
