Along with the folks that come up with the exterior styling of the Porsche 911s, VW Golf designers must be either the most conservative or lazy in the business.
However, that’s OK with me – at least there are no unpleasant surprises like the smiling grille of the new Mazda3 or the complete WTF factor of the current WRX.
When VW cancels the routan and brings the jetta up to snuff i will gladly return to the VW fold. I like the cuisinart wheels in motion, they really draw attention to you. Im glad they kept them and the new GTI looks great but its a sole star in an otherwise tarnished lineup right now. Make mine the 265 HP GTI-R (with 4 doors!)
I guess I’m in the minority when I say that I like the grill on the MkV GTI (full disclosure: I own one). And I think in terms of looks, the MkVI is at best, a step sideways. It looks fine, but nothing about it is distinctive. It looks like any other car out there, a grille above a bumper above an air intake.
And if VW thinks this car is different enough to warrant a new number (VI), then they could have at least given it new wheels.
I have the MKV GTI and it really is one of the most fantastic cars out there to own every day. Fun to drive, great gas mileage, phenomenal engine and transmission, great seats, great style, hatchback, 4 doors, solid feel, and competent handling. I’m absolutely in love w/ the stock exhaust note, too.
That said, they hit the ball out of the park w/ the MKVI. They took the MKV and just made it look even better. I’m glad they kept the huff wheels. I’m suffering w/ the stock Classic-X 17″ and snow tires at the moment. So long as the car doesn’t put me in the poor house maintaining it (jury is out on that at the moment), I don’t see myself ever getting rid of it. It is just too good of a daily driver.
My God, does this car actually have deep side glass so it’s possible to see out of the rear seats? If so, and if they can make one that’s reliable, I might just be interested. I can’t wait for the high-waisted gun-slitted windows look to go away forever.
shaker : Those wheels send a lot of potential customers to the “options” page of the website – smart move VW!
Those are the main optional wheels on the GTI, actually. The standard wheel is a 17″ that looks more traditional. The 18″ huffs were an $800 upgrade. Both are made by BBS, BTW. The Vision style and such are a more expensive upgrade, I believe. It is nice that they offer many different wheels, though. That is one thing that so irritates me about most automakers now.
No, no, no, no. To each his own I guess, but a warmed-over platform from like 20 + odd years ago? No thank you. And the design? This has become a -pastiche of its former self. Of course now, VW has never been very good at coming up with new ideas. I mean the original bug went on for 60 years? Looks like they’re trying to do the same again! No, no, no, no. It’s just like yesterday’s coffee, but about 100 times worse.
Any other major Euro-maker has this beat. Fiat Bravo, so beautiful, so enticing. Ford Focus, so focused, so sharp. Citroen C4 so futuristic, so out there. Peugeot 307 or is that 8? Looks better than this shit. And the Renault Mágane? Yes I like.
Oh wait! There’s the Vauxhall or Opel Astra. Yes, the Golf can copmpete with this one. About as old, not so good looking. The Golf’s the winner!
1 – VW said this GTI was designed specifically to be cheaper to manufacture. Judging by the stellar reviews, it doesn’t show.
2 – VW is also rumored to like the potato-slicer wheels because they’re a part of the GTI brand.
3 – Personally, THANK GOD for the caramel leather option. Black interiors are not “fast” – they’re depressing! The MkV wasn’t available with anything but black plaid or black leather. YAWN. This is supposed to be a GT – wherza luxury?
“Black interiors are not “fast” – they’re depressing!”
Exactly the reason I could never bring myself to by an RS4 Avant. I could forgive the numb steering-wheel and the truffle-hunting predilections of the front end, but not the black cave of an interior, regardless of the quality of the materials used.
Agreed — no more big mouth grille and no silly scallop in the headlights like the Passat or (ahem) Routan.
Usually I fail to get excited by yet another tweak on this decades-old box.
But I’m very happy to see the big grille go away.

Two doors too many!
Sweet looking car – I’ve wanted one since the very first GTI.
They just need to lose the Cuisinart wheels – I’ve never liked those…
Thank God they got rid of the Monica grille.
I’m diggin’ the pronounced wedge in the front bumper. Pointy and sleek(ish).
Looks-ish like a 2010 Mazda 3 from the front
The snout is still there. They just put a big color bar across the middle of it…
Yep, that’ll do’er. Looks much better.
Definite improvement! I may have to put that one (4 doors and all) on my shopping list if it hits the States in a year or two.
Looks good.
I still don’t like those “ninja star” rims though. Luckily, VW offers like 20 different wheel options with the GTI.

2010 model?
Well jayparry,
It sounds as if they have wheeled the “machine that goes ‘ding\'” into the Routan’s hospital suite just now.
Looks nice. I get the whole GTI driving dynamics thing, but I do wish it had just a bit more power and a bit less weight.
Just missing the goofy red haired kid behind the wheel with the peace sign t shirt and the lefty bumper stickers…
Looks ok, I just hope its the next gen. Its really a lot of the same car.
