I can’t watch a video at work, but I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to say that I find Letterman and Leno to be quite the un-funny these days.
Can somebody else please be my proxy / guinea pig and watch it for me and tell me if it’s worth my time? I’d be really upset if I lost some minutes forever on some lame late-night comedian’s lame attempts at lame jokes regarding something so dead-serious as the economy or auto business.
Watch it when you get home. The comment Trump makes about GM is serious, and gets as much applause as any of the jokes about his hairpiece (skip the last half to avoid those).
The whole thing is not worth watching, in my view. Letterman, seriously?
Cutting to the chase, Donald Trump mentions in passing that he thinks GM should be filing for bankruptcy instead of looking for handouts, which gets a lot of applause. I hope this doesn’t burst anyone’s bubble if they’d been breathlessly waiting to watch…
Trump might as well be the most worthless businessman on the planet….but then again….he’s still stinking rich despite failing in almost every second thing he touches….so maybe he’s the most savviest man on the planet?
I’m not entirely cheerleading for the failure of GM (…and Ford and Chrysler), but at this point, bankruptcy would be so much easier. Besides, the UAW needs to be shown the door ASAP.
If given the chance to reorganize, GM could become a really competitive company again, and it would be a shame if their executives’ pride got in the way of not failing.
If I remember right, bankruptcy would allow them to exit existing union contracts. If the existing contracts call for all members to get paid (working or not-working), it would seem like they should be AGRESSIVELY pursuing bankruptcy considering they are probably WAY over capacity in production right now…
However, I don’t get paid millions of dollars to make those type of decisions so I can’t possibly know what I’m saying. :-)
A man who declares bankruptcy as much as Trump is hardly the person anyone should take financial advice from…he’s lucky to have any money left as poorly as he has managed his businesses.
As Letterman said ‘ how can a casino go bankrupt?‘…for god’s sakes people walk in the door and hand you money, yet Trump can’t make that work?!?!? I’d like to see him try and Engineer an automatic transmission. In short, he’s totally out of his depths trying to tell anyone in the car industry what to do. This is about as vapid as would be Wagonner telling Trump how to run a casino…heck at least they have something in common-failure.
Well, Trump probably is an expert on who should file for bankruptcy.
Seriously.
Bridge2far: “Trump mentions GM should declare BK in passing and there is a smattering of applause.”
I watch Letterman fairly frequently. That wasn’t a smattering of applause… that was most of the audience. They rarely get much louder than that.
GM had few friends in that theater. You could try to argue that, “it’s just New York,” (you know, not “the real America,” Mrs. Palin) but they seem to get a lot of out-of-towners in the audience, even in winter.
I’m no Trump fan, but when he removes the ego and vulgarity, there’s a smart businessman still in there somewhere. Trump’s statements explaining the mortgage meltdown and bankruptcy were the most sense he’s made in years.
The reason why Trump still is filthy rich while his schemes always seem to fail is because he doesn’t invest his own money in them. He puts someone elses money in them and runs them into the ground. All while paying himself a large salary to run the scheme.
Guys (and gals), watch the video. Trump’s name is on the casino, but he no longer owns it or manages it. He took the gaming part of his business public and then cashed out.
There is a reason why Trump has a bunch of money. He’s figured out when to exit a losing business.
GM, unfortunately, hasn’t learned that lesson yet.

Trump for Car Czar!
That would be interesting.
His comment is at about the one minute mark for those who don’t want to watch the whole clip.

What should your casinos do Trumpy?

I’ve never had any respect for Donald Trump. Until now.
Absolutely no surprises here.

The first one…Ford, GM, or Chrysler to declare C11 will be the strongest company as we come out of this correction.
If I were the US Govt, I would have only given GM the money if the agreed to file C11. That is the only way they can restructure properly.
Trump is absolutely, 110% correct.
he does make the point that they gave $149 bn. to AIG
which dwarfs detroit – but to me that sounds like giving $50 to a druggie
any amount of money is gonna be shot up into a free vein for no good

He’s right, hopefully him saying it will get some replay on the MSM.

Regarding the gaming industry being down… Good for America.
Trump mentions GM should declare BK in passing and there is a smattering of applause. That portion is about 10% of the clip. What’s the point?
Bridge2far
Well exactly.
Well it’s still funnier than Joaquin Phoenix on Letterman.
I think Gene Simmons should be the financial adviser to GM…oh heck, of the United States!
Well, Trump probably is an expert on who should file for bankruptcy.

Trump is wrong. Why declare bakruptcy when the government will supply a seemingly unlimited amount of money to pay the bills?
Why pay your mortgage when the government will pay it for you?
