Once we are all forced to drive electric tata nano’s with a top speed of 50 mph and constant GPS monitoring by the government, electric RC cars and video games may be the only fun we are allowed to have.
I was building those when I was in elementary school. I prefer the full scale experience as the excitement in a 1/10th scale model is inherently limited.
A quick analogy to sum it up. Pixie sticks are to magic mushrooms what RC is to full scale.
Having driven both electric and gasoline powered go-karts I will say that the fun isn’t lost in the driving experience. I’d actually like to try a full scale fuel cell/electric powered car which utilizes four independent motors to facilitate torque vectoring. Being able to direct torque where it is needed to rotate a vehicle mid turn is a great asset on a road course.
You guys can crap on R/C cars all you want, but not all of us can afford full scale racing. It’s a great social hobby as well as something that parents can do with their kids.
I used to race an XRay T1 EVO2 every weekend until I got out of the hobby when I bought a new car. At the time, it was probably the largest racing club in the country so it was pretty intense racing.
EDIT: I managed to find a video on google of the old PLRC track. If you want to see some factory team drivers duke it out see this:
Being an A-Main driver myself, I always had to find every bit of speed I could. The setup of the car changed throughout the day depending on sweeping of the cars and pavement temperature. It was wicked fun. But I never rivaled these guys. The best I ever did in a season was 5th overall.
The Truth About RC Cars?
I simply cannot get into RC cars… cheap fun I guess.
I have 3 electric RC cars. By buying them used, I only have about $100-140 in each of them, and they are a ton of fun.
Nitro cars require a lot more maintenance and tuning, cost more, and are just generally more complex, so video dude is right. Start with electric.
My son gave up playing with electric cars when he discovered girls.

Electric all the way. It’s all about the instant torques. E-Maxx FTW

I loved my Tyco Turbo Hopper. Great toys for kids.
GM should have just bought a design from Tamiya for the Volt.
Thank you Mr. Farago, that was a fun video and got me to thinking of buying another Japanese car but this next one will be 12″ long.

Maybe I should have mentioned my Losi hobby.

They are good fun when they work.
I quit racing my RC-10 and RC-10T when it became more expensive than it was for me to race Motocross at the top level!
