It figures these renderings of the new British wagon would come from Auto Motor Sport in Sweden, a country fully in love with big wagons. OK, so the last Jaguar wagon, er, estate wasn’t exactly the height of success. Our own RF ripped the British brand a new one for building the X-Type Estate. But perhaps a larger version might do well—especially if the rumor mill is correct and those crazy Indians/Brits have jammed Jag’s in-house 510 hp supercharged V8 under the hood. We should see the Jag estate [Ed. I christen thee “Jagon”] as a completed car at Geneva by that most blessed of automotive dates: 2010. In the mean time, wagon lovers can savor whatever dreams wagon lovers dream.

At first glance I thought, “oh not again.” X-Type Estates are rare here in Holland and 90% of the time when you do see one, it has a UK license plate..tee hee. But looking at this XF closely, I’d say it’s a very good competitor for the incredibly successful A6 Avant…dontcha think? Pack that engine in!!!

Hell yes. The new twin-turbo diesel is apparently very good, and every car on the planet looks better as a wagon.

    The logic can’t be defeated:
    Sedans = for old people
Jaguar = a brand looking for a new, younger customer base

Therefore: Jaguar wagon = good idea

    The only problem here is:

    Automatics = for old people
Jaguar XF = only available with a slushbox (unlike the S-Type)

    Therefore: pointless

Smoking a Mustang GT at a red light, and losing a 911 in the twisties with the ultimate sleepers: Audi RS4 and RS6 Avants (even M3 touring if/when it’ll appear). Oh, and while carrying a large shelf in the trunk!

I’m ALL about crazy powered wagons (and underpowered wagons for that matter) but I see these Jags out and I think Buick. In estate form, I think it’s worse… (I know, I’m crazy, but a quick glance when driving or at a light, the front of these look like a Buick..) :) Really. :)

    I’d buy one if:
1.Tata could convince Ford to borrow some of Volvo’s load handling tricks in the back
2.Jag didn’t bring the V6 over for this model, keep the engines big with the two supercharged V8s.

Considering the way Jaguars depreciate, I can see myself in a four year old used one for sure!

Jaguars design language has NEVER lent itself to beautiful wagons:

    http://www.aronline.co.uk/index.htm?avonxj6f.htm

    It simply does not compute.

I think the current Jaguar styling sucks anyway, this is no different. May be nice on the inside (I hope) and to drive, but outside it’s a sleeper and far from true eye-catching Jaguar styling.

Hmmm, judging by the comments on this article I can see why USA gets the smallest range of vehicles in the world.

Hatchbacks – we hates hatchbacks because..they are “cheap”?
Wagon – we hates wagons because 30 years ago Detroit screwed them up with fake wood paneling.
Funky vans – we hates character..etc

I predict the next fad in USA will be retro SUV’s …

The problem with the X-type wagon was not that it was a wagon, it was that it is an X-type.

Now that Jag has gone back to making proper RWD cars instead of tarted up AWD Mondeos/Countours there is nothing wrong with them offering an estate version of one of those cars.

If they were really ballsy they would offer a shooting brake version of the XK.

Ingvar – Eye bleach. Please. Quickly.

The XF looks pretty cool. Give me the turbo-diesel.

no_slushbox: Well, okey, then. That’s the exception… But I’d still say it looks like a pygmy hearse…

  • avatar

All I can think of is the Harold & Maude E-type hearse.

I actually liked the look of the X-Type, and I like wagons in general. But this one turns a geniunely beautiful car into a snorefest.

    Ingvar:

The two door wagon/brake says I don’t need room for kids, but I still need room for my dogs and guns. I like the message. That’s why I also miss two door SUVs.

The hearse image is a serious issue. It’s most likely why Lincoln and Cadillac couldn’t ever get away with factory wagons, even when giant wagons were a huge market in the US.

I understand the British affection for Estate wagons, and I’ve been tempted over the years by various similar oddballs

The Volvo P1800 looked much better as a wagon er, estate.

Lexus made the IS 300 estate, which I also liked.

I’ve also played with the idea of a 3-series wagon.

Still, I don’t like the look or idea of the Jag-Wag above. As somebody pointed out it looks like a Buick. Additionally, this model of Jag IS an upscale Buick – soft cushy gentleman’s express – NOT a sports wagon.

Somehow I can’t think of a niche for it. For heavy duty hauling, I get a Land Rover. For grocery store work, I get something plain… For high speed work, with the Labs and a couple of shotguns in back – Mercedes or BMW.

    Who buys this thing?

This is just a magazine’s rendering. Chances are the real thing will look very different.

Haven’t logged in or commented in quite a while now but something I saw here compelled me.

    MrCookiepants.

Damn near spit out my beef stew.

RF, what they hell you gonna due if this person turns out to be one of your B&B and you have to quote him?

  • avatar
    wsn

This is the ugliest front end design (due to the headlamps). And people are bashing Acura TL???

  • avatar
    wmba

A couple of weeks ago, I was assured by commenters here that the Maserati RF looks like a Buick. Now the Jaguar XF is supposed to look like a Buick.

Has anyone gone and actually looked at these two non-Buicks? And still think they look like a Buick?

If so, I have a Ferrari Aztek to sell you! Or is it the new California, which we all know, looks like a Buick.

There is a new Acura TL living a few houses down from me. I can assure you that it looks like a droid compared to Jaguar XF. But it sure doesn’t look like a Buick.

  • avatar
    wsn

The TL may be a droid, but the XF looks like a furry animal coded wrong at conception.

Don’t compare the XF to Buicks. Both Allure and Lucerne look better than this “thing”.

    kkt

I’m not going to be in the market for a $50k vehicle soon, but if I was the XF and its wagon body would definitely be on my list to check out.
    I kinda like the Q-ship look…

I thought that was a Subaru in the picture, and I thought “finally, a proper grill on a Subaru” .. oops…

    Dorian666 : “spot on”

I am not a typical American.

I’ve owned multiple hatchbacks, I like them very much. It’s nice to see the selection of these slowly increasing in the US.

I would love an affordable wagon, would have been my last purchase (but for the budget I had, nothing that suited me as a new vehicle, and I was on my twice-in-a-lifetime new car purchase cycle).

And I don’t need a van – I can hire a carryall when needed, or borrow my wife’s typical American “cute ute” (not that it has tremendous capacity).

I distinctly recall confusing the pretty young lady at the rental counter in Germany when I told her that an A4 sedan was too big, and that I didn’t know how to drive with an automatic transmission… it took a while to convince her to downsize me, no matter how cheap the car. Ended up with a Nissan Primera wagon which consumed only tiny amounts of fuel, nifty.

    joeaverage

I’d give it a closer look. I really like hatchbacks and wagons… Good utility, small size relative to SUVs, good driving dynamics.

  • avatar
    B-Rad

Thing only looks good from the A-pillar back. That snout kills it for me, although, I liked it on the sedan.

The best part about the XF sedan is the back, so…

    Ingvar,

Hey, I want a retro SUV! Great idea!

  • avatar
    superbadd75

What made the X-Type wagon a crock was that it was an X-Type and hideous to begin with. Well, that and the fact that it was a not a Jaguar, but a Mondeo, didn’t help. The XF could work in Europe as an Estate, but I don’t see it working in the U.S. ever. BMW and Mercedes wagons haven’t really been big players here, so there’s no reason to think that Jaguar could do any better.

  • avatar
    HellYess

    Please don’t.
Here are (my version) the Jaguar perfect line up:
XF (5 seat sedan, 4 seat convertible, 4 seat coupe); XJ (limo) XK/XKR (roadster 2 seat)

What??? No Jaguar SUV or minivan??? VBG!
