It’s not easy to pinpoint the moment when a story makes the transition from speculation to prediction to assumption. But I think I’ve done it. Autoblog is reporting the usual yada yada yada about Cadillac’s product plans [via the Detroit Bureau]. Sub-CTS this, Euro-wagon that, new flagship the other thing. In the midst of the normal regurgitated spin, smoke and mirrors, Chris Shunk let’s this one drop: “The real question for Cadillac is whether or not GM will be able to afford the new models. If the General goes into bankruptcy, nobody really knows what stands to get cut. Shannon optimistically says that GM’s brand bloodletting could work in Cadillac’s favor, though. With fewer brands to feed, GM’s luxury division could finally get the attention it so richly deserves.” Gentlemen, GM’s “We Won’t File C11” has officially jumped the shark.
I have a better suggestion for Cadillac: make the DTS a fleet only car ala Ford’s panther and JUST sell the CTS. Since it supposedly makes money, why not focus on keeping it fresh and ahead of the competition? When they get that right, then try something else.

Alex, you may have a good strategy. They really may need to learn to get one right. Baby steps, you know.
With Cadillac, each new model gets better, it seems. The CTS was a decent drive, but total crap inside, the new one completely fixed that. The first SRX was a disaster inside, the interior refresh was better, and the new model looks great. The STS’s exterior refresh looks better than the ’05 did when it came out. The Escalade is the nicest full size SUV out there (although a dying breed). So the DTS appeals to mostly septegenarians, who cares? It’s got a client base until a proper replacement comes along, and it’s not a terrible car. Smooth ride, plenty of power, and 28mpg on a road trip isn’t too shabby. It’s not what I’d choose in a luxury car, but nobody’s forcing me to buy one.
Anyway, as far as C11, anyone who thought it really wasn’t coming is 100% delusional.
