Volvo has released its “Focus on the future of Volvo Car Corporation in the 2008/09 Corporate Report” (download “pocket version” pdf here). The report is stuffed with useful information for any private equity firm or car company looking for a nice little Swedish number. For example, it’s nice to know that safety is still on top of the Volvo food pyramid. And don’t expect Volvo to tie one on; the carmaker has one employee in Thailand. And here’s news: the Swedish automaker’s second largest market (after the US) is . . . Sweden, accounting for 47,750 sales in ’08. NOW how much would you pay? Of course, it’s quite the buyer’s market for car brands these days, what with GM jettisoning Saturn, Saab, HUMMER, Pontiac and, perhaps, Opel and Vauxhall. Maybe Holden. What the hell: make an offer for the whole company. Meanwhile, motoring moguls fancying Volvo should address all enquiries to “Big Al” Mulally at Ford Motor Company. You also might want to cc the US Treasury Department, just to be on the safe side.
That is one sweeeet looking ride! That’s a VOLVO?!? P1800 or whatever? Nice. It could easily be something way more exotic.

They also cut down the C-pillar and turned the “rams horn” bumper upside down. The front end has a bit of a nose job, too.
If Volvo built something like this today, I don’t think they’d be up for sale.

and that’s the problem… no-one gives a flying fuck about ‘safe’
they push it like a be all and end all and the reality is that the cheapest korean car these days has 6 airbags and does an NCAP 5
i look at the volvo lineup and there’s just not much to get excited about
put it this way, many people see the volvo as an interim car… a car you buy when finances are limited but want something ‘showy’
next up is the mercedes and that’s where it ends
and that’s why volvo is forever in search of customers (and more importantly, new customers)
let’s not even get to saab

The wheels are stupid, but overall it is very nice. One day I am going to have to rebuild an old car into something even more beautiful than it came out of the factory. Hope it doesn’t come out as sad as many people’s projects though!
