Not the most beautiful BMW ever made but it looks very practical and Euro customers will buy them in droves. In the US – probably not so much. However, the 5 series GT makes a whole lot more sense to me than the X6 which seems to accomplish a lot less with a lot more weight.
It sort of looks like they wanted to try and get a hatch while making it look like a sedan. Needless to say it doesn’t work too well. It looks kind of like a person who’s gotten reconstructive surgery, everything’s there but the whole thing fails to mesh.
It could dwarf the 7, but how does that help it become a 7 Series alternative? This is just not how the moneyed think. If it’s not a proper sedan it must otherwise have Boston Whaler visibility. If not the precious status factor is compromised.
Only a BMW could make the new E-class look attractive by comparison. The C7 Audi A6 is just going to murder this pig-faced monstrosity. I predict BMW fans will want Bangle back before long.
As an owner of a BMW wagon, I’m sure I’m biased…but I don’t see the attraction of a sedan. I cannot recall a car that looks better as a sedan than a hatch either. This is a perfect example, especially since BMW really screwed up the rear end of all their sedans. This looks nice, and is infinitely more practical than a sedan with a trunk (and no folding seats ala BMW practice). Problem is they’ll probably charge 10k for the pleasure, which could buy a small pickup to haul your stuff when needed!
Anyhoo…I don’t see anything wrong with this. Frankly, it’s good if a high-end vehicle forces americans to change their mind about hatches.
the Skoda twin door would solve this problem. Add the utility of a hatch while retaining the sedan profile.

They know how to do it.

They’ve finally managed to come up with a vehicle that fills the niche between two niches.
I never thought any car manufacturer would be stupid bold enough to actually try it, but lately it seems that you can count on BMW to surprise you!
It slots right in between the 5er wagon and the X6, two niches in NA for sure.
This is a relief, because I was thinking, “I wish BMW would come out with a vehicle that’s has less usable space than the 5-series wagon, but still maintains the mass and ugly-ass proportions of the X6. Whatever will I do?”
You know, as much as I like the 3-series/M3, and would like to own one one day, each new monstronsity that BMW is determined to bring to market pushes me further and further into Audi’s arms. An A4/S4 Avant looks really good to me.
I mean, how in hell do these abortions keep getting approved by BMW management (X6, X1, this shit). What the hell is going on over there? It’s gotta be a conspiracy to destroy the company from within. I can’t think of any other reasonable explanation. Sheer ineptitude would be much more subtle, along the lines of GM’s slow decline, This is too much, too fast, so there HAS to be a method to the madness.
Design-wise, it’s way better than the ’02-’08 7-series, current 5-series and X6. I kind of like it….and me thinks you’re all being a bunch of drama queens.
It’s ugly and I wouldn’t bet on there being a manual transmission option. I’m honestly starting to think BMW wants to take on rich GT customers and leave the sports car crowd to the Japanese. My response…”ok”.
I see nothing wrong. Take a BMW sedan, improve with hatchback styling, profit.

Oh look, a 3-series made love with a Prius and this is their newborn baby.
Nothing…it has everything except practicality and style.
3 times the price of a G8 Sportswagon for the same/less? amount of fun and practicality
The computers that calculate Car and Driver’s “gotta have it” score have just exploded.
Ruh-ro. C&D’s bankrupt, aren’t they? Their newly busted computers will be the final straw…
BMW is swooping in to capture on the high end a space that Mazda just abandoned on the low end?
‘Kay.
And why shouldn’t a 7 Series hatchback sell well?
It’s called a 5, but in size, it’s closer to a 7.
The Stay Puff Marshmellow man is riding shot gun.

Instead of wasting time with this, can we have the REAL 1-series here in the US (the 5-door A3 beater). Thanks!

What’s wrong? It looks entirely too much like a 2003-2006 Hyundai Elantra GT, especially in the greenhouse.

The remedy for a fire is never a frying pan full of hot oil.
What’s wrong with this picture? BMW is slowly losing it’s mojo.
BMW owners want sporting CARS, especially given the fact that suv’s are now SO 2007….
And – Americans don’t buy hatchbacks. Especially RICH Americans (the few that are left, I mean).

I like it. OTOH I owned a Saab 9000 Turbo hatch for 10 years. They’re both fun, fast cars which can swallow an incredible amount of stuff.

I agree, but that’s a Hummer-sized if you got going on there.
Seems like a simple ploy to make sure that Porsche doesn’t run away in sales with the Panamera.

Funny, since that car, both in** and out, was a riff on the Saab NG900/9-3.
** seriously, check the shape of the dash. Total rip on the 900/9-3’s 7-shape.
Oink. Oink

who the fuck stepped on my X6?
Paul Niedermeyer: And why shouldn’t a 7 Series hatchback sell well?
He said in jest.
i don’t think it’s possible to blame jack baruth’s best friend herr bangle for this one
but it shows that perhaps that ohio bred zany-ness has rubbed off
It looks like the designer of the Aztek had some say in the final version of this.
BMW, seriously, WTF?
That being said, I sat in the new 7 at the dealership, and damn, that is nice!
oh my god. it is easily one of the ugliest cars to come out so far this century. it’s so tall, it doesnt look much lower than an X6.
BMW of 1999 >>>>>>>>>>>> BMW of 2009
I weep for BMW.
It’s a million times better than anything that starts with an “X”, but couldn’t they make it a bit lower?
And everybody made fun of the Chevy Citation X-11.
Did GM sell AZTEC name plate to BMW?
