Here’s the real auto sales stimulus: your choice of a gas or gun voucher. Max Motors owner says the deal generates a lot of publicity (oops!) and “really angers liberals.” Check out the broad range of reactions to this sales gimmick at Max Motors’ website (via USA Today).

I happen to be a liberal. But I also am a strong supporter of gun ownership rights. What’s wrong with this offer is that the AK-47 is a lousy gun, suited only for idiots who can’t maintain their weapons. It’s the weapon for which the expression “spray and pray” was coined. Futhermore, it’s most likely made in China. Now if he were offering an AR-15, well, that’s a different proposition…
re: bunkie, +1 on pro gun liberal. The AK-47 is somewhat famous because of its popularity in poor foreign countries and in gangster rap lyrics.
But guess what idiots. It’s a commie gun. Another common term for the gun is the Kalashnikov, because it was created by Mikhail Kalashnikov and put to use by the USSR military in 1949.
Like bunkie says, get an AR-15, the modern version of the US designed, US military used M16.
No Slushbox: Thanks for pointing out a level of irony that totally escaped me. Too bad they aren’t branding this as the “socialism special.” Trucks and guns, built by governments… what’s more American than that?
The AK-47 is a much better gun then the M16 regardless of country of origin (country of manufacture is probably a different subject), try doing some searches on the subject (specifically M16 and Vietnam War)
Unfortunately, in actual combat conditions, the AK-47 has a better reliability record than an AR-15. That’s actually a pretty good combination: Ford F-150 and an AK-47. Now, if they’d just thrown in a cab mount gun rack . . . . . . . . .

I have to disagree. I have 17 years of service in the fine USArmy and having used, fixed, and issued many weapons over the years be it Kosovars, Afghanies, or Iraqis, the AK-47 is usually one hunking POS in comparison to the M16A2. Many of my Iraqi counterparts begged to get the M16s (or enviously considered my M4 carbine) mainly for the cacique, but also for the reliability. I think your reference of the M16 bore fruit back in the mid 60s when it was poorly researched and badly manufactured.
Oh, and I too am a Liberal gun toter, though I do not know why someone has to have an automatic rifle such as the AK-47, but so be it.
The AK is not so much lousy as it is unrefined, bunkie. Soviet WWII and Cold War military philosophy maintained quantity has a quality all its own. With millions of not particularly well-trained Eastern Bloc soldiers to kit up, the standard issue rifle had to be both inexpensive to build and idiot-proof. And the AK is both in spades. Built with few moving parts, the AK will still fire flawlessly after 1000s of rounds and even after being buried in sand, dirt and snow –with no cleaning.
Now compare Kalashnikov’s design with Stoner’s American solution — which evolved into the M16 (civilian version, AR-15, which you reference). In Vietnam, the M16, a complex and sophisticated weapon for its day, was plagued with reliability issues. It took several years to work out the bugs, and even still, it’s pretty finicky and requires constant attention.
Hammer vs Scalpal.
An AK is great fun, and even in Chinese stamped-parts form, a 100% dependable fight-stopper.
But I agree, if I buy the truck, I would prefer the AR. Please.

The statistics bear dolorean23 out. While early M-16s had issues, they have a long history of being an exceptionally accurate weapon. The AK-47 is popular due to its low cost and foolproof design. But its accuracy is pitiful compared to the M-16 and it’s variants. In the hands of a well-trained rifleman (an American tradition), a poorly-trained AK-47-equipped opponent is on the losing side of the equation. The horrible ineffectiveness of the AK-47 is, perhaps, the single largest reason why the IED has become the weapon of choice for insurgents. US Army and US Marines are exceptionally deadly in a firefight because of their superior training and weapons.
Why can’t we just love both guns?
Oh, right…. the internet.
Bunkie your last sentence is why the IEDs are the weapon of choice for insurgents not the ineffectiveness of the AK47, If the insurgents has an unlimited supply of M16s the IED would still be the weapon of choice.
It IS funny that this promotion is using a Soviet gun…
At least, both truck and gun target the same population, especially if the truck is red (and it’s no surprise there’s a Viper in the background).
Come on … vile you americans debate domestic wersus cheap eastern imports, vee Austrians dominate the field vit our Stery AUG … eat my lead dust fools …

The early M16s suffered from cost containment as did other weapons systems. The car tie-in is Robert McNamara. This cost containment mentality didn’t hurt Ford much back then, but it sure hurt some of the 58000 KIA in ‘Nam. The receiver wasn’t chrome plated and the ball powder was prone to fouling. Thanks Mr McNamara.
For home defense, remember that sheetrock walls and sofas only stop bullets on TV. An inexpensive Mossberg 20 ga should provide all the persuasion necessary without punching through your neighbor’s walls.

But what if you’re attacked by an entire gang of haitian-mexicans drug-dealing pimps?

@dolorean23
You own guns yet you think this guy is giving away full auto assault rifles? That would be thousands of dollars per and the paperwork would be insurmountable. Turn off MSNBC and get out a little.
And that’s why I love the 1963 Lincoln Continental four door convertible.
re: Detroit-Iron:
If you really want to offend my Liberal sensibilities, you should have hit me up for NPR, not MSNBC (you FoxNews watchin’ reactionary) :)
I do find it interesting that you like the ’63 Lincoln Continental, the same car that Quentin Taratino loves and JFK keeled over in (or was that a ’62?) However, a very classy car. Makes you think, perhaps if Lincoln offered a BAR with every Town Car purchase, how many they could’ve sold.
Considering how much trucks are now, I would only move for something like Robarm XCR, or maybe Para (folding stock, full length rail AR). Most “AK” that I saw in America are rather low quality knock-offs of the basic design, with fire control grop castrated by BATFE (well, Democrats and FDR actually, but whatever).
Seriously, for the average cat at home, either an AR or AK is pretty stupid, at least from a practical standpoint. At home and in close quarters, better to cozy up with your pal, Mossberg.
On the other hand, if things get to the point that either Armalite or Kalashnikov actually becomes a necessary item…well, then a gas coupon may be worthless, since you’ll probably need the former to get the latter.
To be sure, there are lots of reasons why someone might want a particular gun. I happen to like target shooting. The AR-15 I once tried out at a range gave me my best results of the day.
True, I wouldn’t use an assault rifle for home defense. Then again, that’s not why I happen to like guns. At the range (and purely for the fun of it), it’s a different story.
How silly but I must admit: well done Max Motors -you have definitely created a buzz. Much more effective than a giant gorilla or a search light.

Did you say gorilla? Giant gorilla? Honey, you grab the Kalashnikov and I’ll get the AR…we’ve got some serious hunting to do!
I’ve fired both the AR-15(semi-auto version of the M16) and the AK extensively. These weapons come from completely different schools of military thought. The M16 family of weapons are very effective, when they are used by trained personnel and get regular maintenance. The AK requires very little training, and no maintenance. In a Mad Max scenario, I’d go for the AK.
BTW, here is a pic of my buddy firing his AK. If you look closely, you can see the ejected shell case in mid flight.

No need for an F150 nor an AK.
Now if VW would start bundling a Heckler and Koch MR566 with the Jetta TD…
I’ve only fired a military M16 rifle once. It was raining, I was laying in a combination of mud and sand, I was wearing the full army field kit for the first time, and I had never fired a gun before.
I still managed to hit nineteen Ivans out of forty. I’d say it’s pretty damn accurate.

If I recall correctly, it was a 1961 Continental, but updated with new grille and trim.
