BDB: Looks like two dump trucks to me…but that’s really splitting hairs in this instance.
I think the most amazing aspect of this picture is the source (smartcarofamerica.com). Is this really something you’d want to publicize, even if the person inside walked away? It’s waaaay to easy to take this on initial view and form a negative opinion about the product.
It never ceases to amaze me the number of people that (now) take personal photos of death or serious injury for their own consumption (when exactly??).
Ok, ok… this might be pushing the limit of what I can buff out.
@Pete – I’d take a picture of that if I was there, and I don’t think it makes me a bad person. However on the same note if I was the first person on site I’d also be checking first to see if I could help in any way, and wouldn’t be taking close up shots of any mess. But come on… if you saw that and had a cam, you wouldn’t take a picture?
Just to be clear, that photo is NOT from an official Smart car site. Its some kind of enthusiast group site, but it looks a bit like one of those “domain-squatter” generic jobbers as well.
If we’re guessing as to what kind of car that was, I vote Aveo, with the fanciest available non-hubcap type wheels.
+1 to the sentiment that no passenger car/SUV would survive that kind of “caught between 2 immovable objects” situation.
The fact that people said it was a smart car (accident took place in N.C.) I think reinforces (along with the wheel) that it was a wee-tiny Chevy Aveo, probably the 5 door.
People that hate on small cars anyway probably lump all pint sized whips into the same “durn smart car” category.
I struggle to understand why the truck couldn’t bail onto the grass.
I see diesel dummies running red lights all the time in the Toronto area. These idiots will come down a hill at an overpass with their foot down doing 100+ in an 80 zone with cars ahead of them just because they see the amber hand flashing and know the yellow is coming.
I’d agree too that this was not a Smart brand car.
No matter which car it was, those of you who think the full size car or big ass SUV is really gonna “save” you in a wreck like this are a bit delusional. Have you seen the pics of said larger vehicles flatted in similar wrecks? Do you really think a class 8 semi or dumptruck will NOT flatten you in a Suburban or Crown Vic or Camry?
Hey, I’m all for freedom of vehicle choice and responsibility for one’s decisions. Let’s simply not be delusional about the size-n-safety topic. And….a moment of silence for whomever was involved in the pictured wreck.
Yes, even an SUV would be crunched up… but I’d MUCH rather have been in a Suburban than whatever popcan on wheels that was. I’m bettin I’d still be alive.
BTW, the results would have been nearly the same had the two trucks been a Suburban and Explorer or equivalent vehicles.
If there was anyone in that at the time, they did NOT walk away. Floated away, maybe…
That looks *very* much like a Photoshop job – the sheen and level of detail on the so-called wreck don’t match anything else in the photo. I could be wrong, but until I see the source….
Doesn’t matter what you’re driving in this type of crash. You need to know though, that if you are ever between two trucks, you better have an escape route. You can’t let yourself be in that kind of situation to begin with.
Five-bolt, could be an Aveo… though those look suspiciously like X-Trail wheels.

Nothing’s going to survive being sandwiched between two trucks. Not even another truck. I’ve seen many accidents with full-frame seven seaters… and even with just one truck in the accident, there were fatalities in the SUV.
I am embarrassed that the B and B has reduced themselves to arguing what the wheel is from. Who gives a sweet %^$# about what type of car it was?
My heart goes out to the the people involved, the emergency personnel, and the family/families that had to deal with the gore of the aftermath. That ain’t pretty stuff!!!
Pardon the language but…holy shit.
Ouch is putting it mildly.
Does it now qualify as a clunker?
I don’t think any car fares well when crushed between two eighteen wheelers, whether it’s a Smart or a Sequoia.
Not sure what would have survived this accident but I am not giving up my full size vehicles anytime soon!
Now can we get serious about moving more freight off the highways and back onto the rails?
Wonder what car that was. Definitely not a smart, the wheels are wrong.

TERMINATED !

Tonnage prevails…..
JESUS! I almost spewed iced tea all over my keyboard. Somebody walked away from this?

@ Slare
… if you saw that and had a cam, you wouldn’t take a picture?
If I could assure myself that no-one was/is injured (and certainly not dead) then maybe.
The wheel has a five bolt pattern, meaning it’s undoubtedly from a larger car; the wheel looks a lot like those on a Grand Prix a few years back.
+1 to the notion of getting freight off of our highways and on to railways. If I were president, that transition would be one of my top priorities.
Now THAT is parallel parking!
I struggle to understand why the truck couldn’t bail onto the grass.

Moving freight on rails might be a good idea, but this doesn’t prove it. My drivers ed teacher had all kinds of hideous train accident photos.
It isn’t terribly practical to substitute rail for material carried by dump trailers. To a jobsite. I’m just sayin’.
No one else said it? OK, I’ll say it then:
D’oh!

RF said it was “not smart.” what could be clearer?
check out the hood on the red dump truck – looks a little distorted to me
Now that’s a “compact” car!
Twotone
That looks like an HHR to me, somehow. And +1 “Now can we get serious about moving more freight off the highways and back onto the rails?”

I believe that the interpretation of the headline by many was that it isn’t smart to drive a smart, with the picture as proof.
Its clear that its an Aveo, but the title suggests otherwise… The Aveo is a deathtrap in comparison to the smart.

Yeah, I’m thinking they need a flatbed truck and not an ambulance as pictured. The jaws of life ain’t gonna live up to their namesake in this case.
Five-bolt, could be an Aveo… though those look suspiciously like X-Trail wheels.

not sure but if that were a smart car the tridion cage would hold up better than if it was an aveo which i think this might be.
you can practically feel the aveo buckling when it rains hard….or if you go over 60 whichever comes first…
besides there is too much debris between the two tricks for a smart, the fortwo’s panels are plastic the car wont look like that when crushed.
besides how fast was that truck going?
¡¡¡¡A LA MIERDA CARAJO!!!!
No I won’t apologize for the language.
Those wheels are definitely not from a Smart. They look like some Toyota wheels to me.
There should be someone sadistic enough to have taken pics of the inside butchery. Yes, they should be on the webz too.
I am embarrassed that the B and B has reduced themselves to arguing what the wheel is from. Who gives a sweet %^$# about what type of car it was?

I know I couldn’t have handled it…
Damn! The guy who walked away was definitely saved by his angel on that day… else he was a hamburger.
