We are proud to be the inaugural City to unveil the first of seven Floralscapes along one of our busiest highways. The commute for Angelenos will now be brightened by floral murals that embody the City’s progressive approach to solving environmental issues by merging beautification, sustainable design and reducing our carbon footprint. From the construction workers to the business team, this public-private partnership with Toyota and Greenroad Media has spurred local job creation across the board.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa in a press release (via PRNewswire) about Toyota’s L.A. “Harmony Floralscape” Prius promotion.

    Are we living in 1984?

I bet that takes a lot of water to keep up.

    Stimulus money?

Nothing’s wrong with it. If it is part stimulus money, then it’s being used for its targeted mission (job creation). If Toyota’s in it just for some good old marketing, what’s wrong with that?

I’d rather have some advertising money go towards a project like that than towards another TV commercial.

Looks like they had to take out at least 3 trees to plant that thing. It’ll probably be dead and brown in about 3 months.

Toyota’s saying, “Sorry about that NUMMI thing. Hopefully these plants will help you forget that one.”

That will certainly green-wash that Tundra and Sequoia right out of the consciousness of Californians commuters.

That reminds me of the time the geniuses in the naval shipyard wanted to set up a living Bicentennial emblem on a bank near the commander’s office. There were a few problems…they wanted to use rhododendrons, which are easy to keep up hereabouts in the right kind of soil, but they don’t come with blue flowers, so they had red, white, and bluish purple. Then it turned out that the different colored flowers didn’t all bloom at the same time.

Fortunately, they did a better job repairing warships….

LA has a water shortage this year, and homeowners have been slapped about the face and neck with water restrictions and increased pricing. I wonder if these flowers are indigenous to the LA area.

    Mr. Mayor?

Maybe they should’ve spent the money on graffiti removal.

Yet another example of how public “leaders” have to truly be out of touch to be elected. Wonderful.

    Beat me to it.

Beautifying urban areas is laudable, but that press release is so full of fertilizer I can’t begin to see this as anything more than another one-shot PR stunt. I sure a few flowers will brighten the gridlocked commute of the overtaxed Angelinos that are fortunate enough to be employed.

Is there a button that would let me view the photo and the comments at the same time?

Anyway, the link contains the following paragraph:

“The Floralscapes are created from organic and reusable materials and are maintained using ecologically friendly techniques, including the utilization of non-potable water, solar electricity and ecologically responsible insect and fungi control. California-based businesses are contracted to install and maintain the Floralscapes. The non-profit Los Angeles Conservation Corps, which provides training, education and work experience to at-risk young adults and school-aged youth, will maintain the areas surrounding the Floralscapes.”

It seems to be pretty well-executed so far. No surprise – Toyota’s PR works, hence its reputation among the general public. They’re probably the most underrated PR division ever.

This state is officially f’d! Now people are paying taxes to support Toyota ads. I thought I’d seen it all.

    Mayor Pendejo strikes again.

Wonder where in he was when he issued the press release ? He’s never in Los Angeles……

The day after his reelection as Mayor he was off to Africa with his concubine for a week.

    Useless.

The grass that formerly occupied the now barren area in the photo probably did more to scrub CO2 from the atmosphere than this display.

From the main page, instead of clicking on “comments,” click on the title of the post instead. You can then see the entire post and all the comments on the same page.

It seems to be pretty well-executed so far.

Actually, it would be well-executed if the area was left in its natural state, and the jobs it “created” applied to something more productive. All I see here is a make-work project supported by a list of enviro-buzzwords.

When corporate PR and politicians agree on something, you just know it’s going to be pointless.

Its natural state? Along a freeway?

Its natural state? Along a freeway?

Yes. Whatever grows next to a freeway, without intervention, is a “natural state”.

The freeway’s surroundings don’t need little artificial gardens any more than a tree ravaged by elephants, or a forest burnt down by lightning, needs them.
