I don’t fancy myself as a car designer so I can’t say what it is, but this just doesn’t look right to me. Maybe because the roofline doesn’t mesh with the body. Perhaps someone with more knowledge could elaborate.
I’m a MINI lover (have an 05 MCS), but there is something very off about the roof. I think that if they kept the roof black, it would hide some of the weird rear glass/side glass/roof shape. They should have really stolen a page from the TT book and completely copied its roof. I can’t say that I’m a fan of it as it sits. I would never consider spending my own money on one.
Interestingly, the profile of it reminds me of an Automoblox car I have. I do really like the profile… just fix the details and ditch the Geo Somethingorother hatch. Copy the TT!
Thats just funky enough to be attractive to someone like me that finds typical “dont offend anyone” design languages to be incredibly boring. (i.e., most toyotas, hondas, mercs, bmws and audis)
Mini determined that their current line-up is too comfortable for tall drivers. This is the correction. I guess I could drive it with my head out the window.
I like it stylistically. But I think I’d feel claustrophobic inside of that thing, and I probably would not be able to sit up straight. same concept, higher greenhouse might work well.
It follows the current designs of many cars, in which the idea is to minimize glass area (is glass really expensive nowadays?), or maybe to look like a chopped 49 or 50 Merc, with the beltline way high. To me, these things look like they have a high beltline, not a low top.
The New Mini never really made sense as a 2-door hatchback sedan or as a 4-passenger convertible because the rear seat was too small for anyone except children and small dogs.
The insurance will probably be higher than a regular New Mini, but there’s a market for a fun-to-drive 2-seater that gets good gas mileage. The market that Honda chose to ignore when they discontinued the CRX.
The supposed upcoming 2-passenger convertible version of the New Mini sounds good too!
After many years as #1, top of the heap, leader of the pack, numero uno, the big dog; the Pontiac Aztek has finally been toppled as the Ugliest Car ever conceived.
I’m ashamed to admit, I’d hit that thing. Not in the literal sense… I’d actually love to drive that.
The current MINI is a pointless exercise in styling… average sized humans don’t fit in the rear seats of the regular MINI, the Clubman’s twin rear doors give you a rear view to die of (no, that’s not a typo) and the upcoming SUV makes about as much sense as a rubber pancake.
This strips all the pretensions of utility out. This is a car you’ll buy to drive, period.
I can dig that. Yes, it’s god-awfully weird, but I can dig that, too.
Ah, so Mazda had a surplus of silver MX-5 hard tops somewhere and flogged them to MINI!?
Looks like what a very hapless mechanic would come up with from his home garage after rolling his MINI. A fitting 50th tribute? Not in a million years. You should be ashamed BMW.
Is this the Ivanka Trump special edition? Kinda cute but with a seemingly shrunken head.

Love child of an FJ Cruiser and a Mini.
So ugly it’s cute?
I’ve always wanted a MINI with even less interior room and practicality.
Are you sure this post isn’t miscategorized? Seems more Whiskey Tango Foxtrot to me.
Now there are two things about MINI that bother me. The PlaSkool dashboard and the concept roofline.
The only way I can see this work is making it a hardtop convertible. But the fixed glass in the rear would prevent that in its current design.
DEZ
I’m pretty sure these would move at a MINI dealer.
In the words of Jessie James “because it’s wrong.”
Kind of reminds me of the Alfa Romeo SZ. I like it. It’s “awesome” in that boyracerish way. I’d rather have that instead of an Audi TT.
No more or less practical than a Lotus Elise, but maybe cheaper and almost as fun to drive?
Why the über complex and heavy retractable hard top?
@akitadog: should they use a Clubman next time?
Hideous. Hideous. Hideous.
@Stingray: I think it’s a hatch, not a retractable hardtop.

This one looks like it was designed by the Hot Wheels team.

That pic really looks like it was taken in the old VW ‘unpimp za auto’ warehouse. Which is convenient, cause that thing needs the trebuchet treatment.

Please. God. No.
I like it!

What a douche-mobile. Why oh why?
“Is this the Ivanka Trump special edition?”
I have seen her in person, she is tall, at least 5’10” in flats, and well proportioned, to say the least. She wouldn’t fit in that PoS.
It would look much better if the roof were painted black.
That’s not some wonky Rinspeed style custom? That actually came out of BMW?
I thought Bangle and Vanhooydonk were gone?
It looks like it’s wearing a hat. I don’t love, but i like enough to think I would buy one if I were a much shorter man.

It’s not the best looking thing but it is the first Mini I’ve seen that a guy could drive.
nice toupé
Better this than the Clubman.

Actually, it grows on me. Perhaps it’s because I belong to the demographic, but I’d want one. Badly.
Bring back the ’66 Broadspeed GT!

For some reason looking at this; the first thing that came into my mind was, Geo Storm.
