Ah, beautiful. It appears that BMW is well on its way to strangling the Bangle. Gads, that guy designed ugly cars. Were he an engineer, he’d be designing the engines for Yugos.
Efficient this, efficient that, blah blah blah, just more corporate PR spin…we’re so green, really, we are, no matter what our product line looks like now.
How efficient are all the new fat crossovers/ touring hatchbacks? And the new X6 M (for monstrosity?) And the tubby little 1-series that is barely lighter than the 3-series?
By chasing every possible market segment, and embracing ugly styling and infuriating i-drive technology (finally fixed?), BMW has a long road back to being one of the most desired cars in my garage. Here’s hoping they find their way…
And btw, van Hooydonk was a TOTAL ‘partner in crime’ with Bangle in designing some of the eyesores BMW has foisted on us in recent years. He had major input into the ‘Bangle butt’ and ‘flame surfacing’ design direction. Breaking them up seems to have improved the looks of the cars, but together, they were a gruesome twosome.
Ya know, I was wondering how long it would be before we saw a door with a big, low, horizontally split window. Makes sense. Gives you better visibility in a very low-slung car, while (hopefully) retaining some protection against side impacts.
A BMW coupe that weighs just over 3,000 lbs, gets from 0 to 62 in 4.8 seconds and get 60+ MPGs can have a home in my garage any day. I also happen to think its beautiful – so if this is the new design direction I say bring it on.
3 cylinder turbodiesel… (the 3-pot is the best engine config… next to the boxer-four and the V-twin… seriously…) 350 hp, 75 mpg, 0-62 in 4.8 seconds… four seats and mid-engined?
Count me in.
Oh, and the styling is fantastic. I doubt it will reach production, but as a preview of the next sub-M 3-series… or possibly even the next M3… it’s impressive.
Oh come on, BMW can’t even manufacture cars with reliable LED instrumentation. To think that they’re going to multiply the level of electrical complexity by 300% is delusional.

Absolutely stunning. Bring it to production.

Looks to me like mr. Hooydonk has had more than his fare share of glances towards Mazdas concept cars</a> of recent years.
They should call it EfficientBullshit.
The car looks like it has buck teeth when viewed from the front with the probably illegal blue lights on.
I like the Bangle look. Except for the feline eyes.

Interesting new direction and engine technologies. The devil will be in the details of getting from concept to production.
Enough talk. Now make the damned thing. Make it real, make it reliable, and tell me what the mileage will be to run it on Diessel.
No hybrids: This keeps BMW off my list. Fix that, willya?
