That’s one of the cooler things I have seen! I wonder how many farmers reconfigured their Fordson tractors to run that rig, or if it was in the cost range for a farmer to buy!
The concept lives to this day – mattracks.com has track-conversion systems for pickup trucks/SUVs etc. I always thought that would be fun to have for the winter.
You have to admit that it looks like fun.
That poor horse!
Some guys made a modern one of these to cross the Bering Strait or some Arctic-related adventure not too long ago.
That is so cool. That poor horse at 3:15 though. Was no one supposed to nitice when they made this at 6:44 the driver accidentally breaks through the fence.
Great footage- where did they find the film?
In the late 1960’s, Chrysler was commissoned by the Army to build a dedicated ‘jeep’ to go through the rice paddies and mud of Vietnam. It was a dual-helix drive that looked a lot like the Armstead.
I especially liked the tie and top hat. It would have been better accompanied by the Benny Hill theme song though!

I’d buy one!
It’s all fun and games until you fall off the seat and down onto one of those turning cylinders.
Fantastic – I love wild stuff like this. For a huge selection of wacky snow vehicles check these out – http://carnuts.us/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=3883
Great collection Dave, pretty cool stuff!
A similar vehicle can be seen at the DAF Museum in Eindhoven.
