Last week’s Checker Marathon tailgate was tough enough. And then Dr Lemming has to go and snatch defeat from the jaws of victory with this comment: I’m not remembering a wagon with such a pronounced horizontal character line right above the bottom of the tailgate. For example, I don’t think it is a Checker wagon. Oi veh! Congratulations on your certainty anyway. Have fun!

Its British,I think. Morris Minor 1950 ish ?
Ford Anglia, ummmmmmmmmmm 1940s model?
This has to be one of the largest pictures yet for a CC clue…..
Volvo PV444-544?
Volvo PV544
I don’t know what it is but I’m liking it already. The Anglia might be right.
Morris. My strong gut reaction was immediate, before I noticed that Mikey made the same guess (ish).
Fun Fact: Amy Dickinson, “Ask Amy,” of the Chi Tribune has one. I shot her with her Morris Minor in the early-mid-90s on Connecticut Ave. in DC, where I lived at the time. This was long before she got the job.

How do you shoot somebody with a Morris Minor? You might collide with them, or hit them, or something like that, unless, of course, unless her Morris Minor featured a built in machine gun.

Verrrrryyyy slooowwwlllyyy.
Austin A40 Devon. Those old Austins had such distinctly British styling, a mate had an A30 back in the day, which had a similar exterior….
PV-444
From left field… There’s something about the gauge layout that made me think of my grandmother’s Peugeot 403 4-door. Some of you may remember the 403 cabriolet Peter “now let me get this straight” Falk drove in Columbo.
Plymouth something or the other
Pretty sure it’s not a Volvo 444/544.
I think Styles has it with the A40.
Subaru 360?
Yes, Austin A40 Devon. I had one until 4 years ago. I think this one’s a 1949 or 1950 due to the color of the dash. The 1951’s and 52’s had a woodgrain paint on the dash. And in 1953, the Somerset replaced the Devon, with an updated body but nearly the same mechanicals (except for the column mounted 4-speed shifter that replaced the nice direct floor-mounted lever that went direct into the top of the tranny.)
There were a ton of these cars up here in BC throughout the 50’s and 60’s.
Ah yes, it was the Somerset that looked similar to the A30, not the Devon.
Isn’t that a 1948 Checker Minor 4? The ’48 got the squared off bezels.
Have to go with late 40s Austin as well-steering wheel, floor shift and dash.
I’m going with the PV544. The PV444 had a divided windshield. The Morris Minor was well known for its center speedometer. I think the Anglia had a flat windshield.
I’ll cast my vote for a Morris Minor.
Well, it’s a British marque, from the steering wheel, exported to N.A., from the left-hand drive, and it’s not a Riley 1.5, it’s not a A40, nor is it a A30, because the dash layout doesn’t match any of those. It’s too small to be a Morris Oxford/MG Magnette/Austin Cambridge, and as Wolseley wasn’t imported here, it’s got to be a Morris Minor.
It’s got a solid windscreen, so it’s from 1956 on, probably a ’56 or ’57.
Austin A40 Devon (I suppose it could be a two door Dorset but those are a bit more rare and probably all hot rodded by now). I actually have a workshop manual for these. They have a funky brake set up with the fronts being hydraulic and the rear being mechanical. Most still came with the crank handle to start them (they do have a starter as well) – the engine is an early relation to the MG B.
1948 or 1949 Austin A40 Devon. No question.
@Redox,
it is so not a Peugeot.
