One year ago today, General Motors took the “unthinkable” step of filing for bankruptcy. It was a seminal moment in the history of the American auto industry: the day that once-dominant GM finally shed its illusions, faced up to reality, and plunged into the cold, cleansing waters of bankruptcy reorganization. Or, to use a more accurate metaphor, it was pushed in. After decades of decline masked by decades of PR-driven denial, GM had literally lost the ability to self-correct.

The South Carolina House of Representatives voted Thursday to make the state’s ban on photo radar explicit. In 2006, the office of the attorney general issued an opinion stating automated ticketing conflicted with state law, but Ridgeland officials decided to ignore the ruling and operate a speed camera van on Interstate 95. The town of 2500 wants to deploy cameras to ticket out-of-state drivers as they pass through the seven-mile stretch within the town’s limits.

Japanese car buyers are still auto otaku. In May, new car sales in Japan rose for the tenth straight month. Total sales of registered vehicles are up 28 percent to 228,514 units, the Japan Automobile Dealers Association told The Nikkei [sub].

A year ago I reported how Renault was using French Government money in exchange for keeping jobs in France. Then Renault landed themselves in trouble when Renault wanted to transfer production of the Clio to Turkey and the French Government made their feelings quite clear.
