Now don’t get us wrong: we agree with the principle that there aren’t enough affordable options in the mid-engine sportscar segment. And we certainly admire Mr Chen Jinmiao’s attempt to build his own, despite his apparent lack of engineering education (“I downloaded the drawings from the internet, then bought the materials from the market”). But why, oh why, does the Daily Mail insist on framing the story in terms of Mr Chen’s lifelong love of Lamborghinis? Again, with all due respect to Mr Chen’s accomplishment, his “car” is to Lamborghini what this is to GMC.

Despite the fact that it is hideous, good for him. I wish I had the time and willpower to build my own car from scratch!
Although the styling isn’t sophisticated but it takes a huge amount of effort to build a functioning car from scratch. Its a shame the article is so light on real details. Would love to know more about the details of the build. Looks like a light weight ladder frame with the body added on top instead of a space frame but its hard to tell from the low resolution photos.
What is the maximum speed? Until the yellow panels fall down?
By the way, is it made in wood?

After seeing the weekend warriors at the DIY store anguishing over what screw to buy to fix some project at home, I give this guy a ton of credit. There aren’t many that could get close to pulling this off – unglamorous as it appears.
So Ed, are you going to post pics of your homebuilt car? What, you have never built one? But you can comment on Mr. Chen’s effort?
Who among us could have done this well, not even considering doing better. Go Chen.
This reminds me of a Diablo replica that was built on top of a old Fiat Punto chassis, held together with tie-wraps and ductape. And it couldn’t outrun a Golf GTI. This looks like it is at least well built (for a one-man project).
