Yes, really. The Bricklin: An Automotive Fantasy opens at the end of the month, in Fredricton, New Brunswick, not far from where the Bricklin SV-1 was built. And despite the fact that Bricklin’s SV-1 project left the citizens of New Brunswick with $23m in public debt when the fantasy fell apart, the locals aren’t looking back in anger. The Fredricton Playhouse’s executive director tells the NYT that
We’re going for a cabaret-meets-disco-meets-car-show vibe. It’s supposed to be fun. It’s a story about hopes and dreams
The moral of the story: Canadians are bad at holding grudges. Oh yes, and the auto industry will never tire of larger-than-life characters like Bricklin.

While I absolutely loathe musicals, wedge shaped cars and disco music are appealing enough for the plane ticket.
I smell TTAC’s first ever theatrical review!
“The moral of the story: Canadians are bad at holding grudges.”
Or that they’re looking to make lemonade out of their lemons?
Reminds me of a story a Canadian friend told me years ago. He was talking about some of the troops in his unit and referred to one of them as a “wicker.” Since I’m a Yank, I had to ask what a wicker was. His response: “That’s someone from New Brunswick, you know, a place like your Arkansas where everyone’s related.” Totally explains the Bricklin musical.
I live in New Brunswick, and while the hole Bricklin-era is mocked mainly as a political fiasco, everyone thought it was cool to have an iconic sports car built in our part of the world. It was a bold, risky investment.
In the end it never quite worked out that way, but the quirky Bricklin has a special part in our gearheads’ hearts.
I still see a few rare Bricklins being driven around town, and they look even cooler today than they did back then.
I have an irrational soft spot for gullwings, especially the Bricklin. (Maybe that’s why I like the pop-top Sterling too.)
Fredericton (with an E after the D)… :)
I was just there last month, for the first time. Bricklin never even crossed my mind; I’d forgotten the cars were built there. Too bad I wasn’t there late enough for the exhibition.
New Brunswick is a highly underrated place to visit, by the way. The Bay of Fundy coastline is beautiful and there are a lot of twisty secondary roads that would be a great place to take a nice car.
I’m from NB as well. Come and visit when the Atlantic Nationals are in Moncton. It’ll have to be next year as they were last weekend. :(
800 or so classic cars this year. Not too bad for our little corner of the world… Oh, and at least a couple of Bricklins usually show up.
“It’s supposed to be fun.”
I was going to make a snarky comment like, “What, and there’s entertainment that’s supposed to make you miserable?”
Then I realized that a performance of pretty much any straight play written between 1940 and 1960 falls into that category. F*ck you, Arthur Miller, and the horse you rode in on.
+1 To Atlantic Nationals in Moncton.
There are a few Bricklin’s roaming around just down the highway here in Halifax as well. A couple I see regularly.
A friend of mine in Ontario recently sold his, as he wasn’t using it enough. His personalized license plate was “NBFIASCO”…
