Yes, dear TTAC readers, your humble Editor-in-Chief was unable to fight his impulse, and is the proud owner of a fine automobile. Which means that he is also unable to fight the impulse to spend this federal holiday actually driving the thing rather than sitting in front of a computer all day. So, while I’m out enjoying the fruits of my labor, it falls to you, our most dedicated readers, to guess what kind of car I just blew several paychecks on. Check back tomorrow for a capsule review on the new editorial chariot (as well as the full compliment of TTAC content)… in the meantime, let’s hear your guesses.

w124 . . . 500E
In the hope of that I clicked that link, but i’d have to go with the Audi aswell.
Audi 5000.
Audi UR Quattro
Isuzu Impulse?
Nope.
I was thinking original Quattro Coupé, but the angle of the C-pillar seems wrong …
I’m going to go with ’79 Fairmont coupe (but not the Futura kind!)
Wishing you many pleasurable miles in your new wheels…
btw, just saw the strangest things on the way to dinner … Three Bentleys travelling together … there was the black Sedan from Geneva, a black old-style sedan from I forget, and a silver coupe from Cannes … all populated by upper middle-aged guys … but all seemingly with their original wives…
92-94 Audi s4
+1
That seems most likely. +2
No … the angle is wrong, the window rubber is wrong and on the Ur-S4 the upper line is really just a character line, on this one it looks like the middle piece is actually separate.
And the Ur-quattro has a vent rather than a double line in the C-pillar.
I usually avoid these, but since it’s a car Ed actually bought I just blew far too much time looking over pretty much everything offered in the U.S. in the past 25 years.
Got nowhere.
Seems closest to Audi Avants of the early 1990s, but the lack of window trim is puzzling.
Woot! I was thinking the same thing.
The D-pillar on the 200/A6 Avant is too narrow to match the photo.
Why couldn’t you give us a YEAR?
If you spent “several paychecks” I assume its a 2009 or better.
How big do you think Ed’s paychecks are?
He likely paid the entire amount, and not just a down payment.
I haven’t a clue Mike. I would have appreciated a year though.
I want to say Audi 100/A6 (’91-’97), but the trim doesn’t quite match up (they tend to have chrome window surrounds). Maybe the original Ur-S4/S6 (name switched halfway through the production run) as that deletes the chrome, or the Audi 80 Avant perhaps?
+1 on the Audi 80 Avant
Yep, another vote for the Audi 80 Avant.

Certainly looks the part but afaik the 80/90 Avant was never available in the US
87 to 89 Escort GT
I’m gonna go out on a limb and say it’s actually the even more rare EXP. But with paint in that condition it must be the world’s most cherry example.
The lines aren’t right for either Escort.
But I’m stumped myself, have checked all candidates I can think of, and none of them match.
@Educator
Yes, I can see the 87 to 88-1/2 EXP in those lines, passenger side c-pillar, but agreed, possibly the most cherry example on the planet.
Kinda hoping you had got a Subi SVX or a Merkur XR4.
Owned an xR4Ti, it just doesn’t fit.
’99 S4 quattro?
Glass-windowed coupe or sedan.
Renault Fuego.
It’s either a coupe or an SUV
’96 or ’97 MB 500E?
How about a late 80’s Dodge Shelby Charger.
It sure doesn’t look like you what you told me you were looking at. I hope it’s at least as much fun
Audi Coupe GT – the one based off the 4000?
The boxyness indeed screams out Ford something to me, as does the color. I am almost going to say late 80’s early 90’s fox body Stang, sedan version, not hatchback.
1986 Mercedes 300E w124
Audi V8 Quattro If so, I sure hope the timing belt was changed recently! If not, I could see a wave of interesting posts on engineering design and “what the heck were they thinking”.
The V8 had chrome window trim.
I looked at a V8 Quattro picture and decided I was wrong…lucky for Edward as he would not have time to be on his computer or drive since he would always have a spanner in hand.
But I this nails it …. 1997 Audi A6 2.8 V6 AVANT
“C4” Audi 100 CS Quattro sedan.
B4 Audi 90 Avant, circa 1995.
1990 V8 Quattro Sedan
1907 Lexmobile Phaeton 12hp.
Silver was an unusual color.
An invisible finger is poking my innards, nudging me to blurt out a very general guess just to see if I was within the proverbial ball park……..
A Mitsubishi of some sort OR one of its derivatives labeled with a Dodge or Plymouth label from back in the general 1980s era or so.
Now, finger, quit poking me.
That’s my guess too. Rebadged Mitsu.
I am 100% completely convinced that it’s some sort of Audi Avant from the 90s. Audis of that era confuse me way too much to try to pinpoint it. Between the name changes from 80/90/100 to A4/A6 and the fact that the first S4 was really like an S6, I can’t keep it all straight. But yes, definitely an Audi Avant.
Could it be a Kei car? I don’t think they can be imported to the US until they are 25 years old, but they can be imported into Canada after 15 years. A Honda Beat driven down from Vancouver?
Audi RS2 Avant (94-95 production).
Oh , that would be a treat! Don’t think they were imported to USA though, were they? Maybe the S2 was.
190E?
Bitter SC. You can look it up.
MItsubishi Starion ?
1st Generation Toyota MR2, probably from the last half of that generation. I think the horizontal trim piece in the photo was black with lines early in that model run, but later some or all of them had a body-color piece inserted instead. If so, nice choice.
Checked this out earlier That piece of trim had slits in it with the MR2. Also couldn’t find any photos where it wasn’t black.
This photograph has been driving me frickin’ nuts. The guesses people are making are good, but on closer inspection none of them seem to be a perfect match.
The Audi 80 Avant looks like the most promising candidate. However, the lines in the photograph suggest very slab sided body work (ie, unlike the D pillar area in the Audi wagon). Also the window seems quite recessed in to the frame. On the Avant I think the window is more flush fitting.
A Mercedes-Benz 190E is another good guess. The angularity certainly seems right. However, the photo shows no door cut line tracing down from the C pillar. And there were no 190E coupes (ie, so this can’t be a doorless C pillar on that type of vehicle).
The photograph suggests something either European or Japanese (ie, due to the lack of chrome trim around the window). The slab sided styling suggests a 1980’s design. It’s either a coupe or a wagon (due to the absence of a door cut line). When I look at this photo a lot of sharp edged cars come to mind (Volvo 740/760/780, Subaru XT, Mark I Toyota MR2, Mark II Audi 80, Mark II Volkswagen Passat / Quantum Wagon, Dodge Omni 024, Renault Alliance, Mark I Dodge Colta Vista, etc…). However, none of these cars have a C / D pillar cutout like this (ie, not louvered and painted to match the body work)
I’m totally stumped … and looking forward to an answer!
Early 90’s Audi 100 Avant Quatro ….I have a 97 A6 Avant in that exact color….Audi rules!

Ok already, where is the follow up story telling us what it really is?
