Edmunds expects December car sales to be the highest of any month of this year. They figure that approximately 1,127,000 units will have changed hands when the month ends. This represents a 10.2 percent increase from December 2009 and a 30.4 percent increase from November 2010. Why?

“Two highly anticipated vehicles were launched this month: the Chevy Volt and the Nissan Leaf. Neither contributes much sales volume, but it should be good for the brands to have these green halo vehicles in the lineup and at dealerships,” Edmunds analyst Ivan Drury figures. Sure. While this sounds a bit like a stretch, Nissan and GM look particularly good on the Edmunds table of December expectations.

Edmunds joins the crowd that counts on a total of 11.5 million units to be sold in the U.S. for all of 2010.

That would represent a 10.5 percent increase from 2009’s 10.4 million.

Reason for Christmas cheer? Not so fast. “While we’re far better off than a year ago and the trajectory is trending upward for a much brighter 2011, 2010 goes into the history books as the second worst year for car sales since 1982 — second only to 2009,” commented Edmunds.com Senior Analyst Michelle Krebs.
