Why would Ferrari’s test drivers waste their time trundling around the streets of Maranello in the non-road-legal 458 Challenge, the racer-boy version of the 458 Italia? Because it hadn’t yet passed the the crucial test of hypercar performance found at 3:17 in this video. Next up, the “asshole test.”

Where does this alarm come from? And how it is related to this Ferrari?
Sounds like it’s coming from one of the parked cars the Ferrari drove past. I guess this Ferrari is so loud that it set-off the car alarm.
The Challenge’s exhaust sets off a car alarm as it drives past. As the final link in the piece points out, this is an important feature for hypercar buyers.

Yup. Just ask the boys at Top Gear.
The good Top Gear.
Heh, yeah, real supercars set off car alarms, like my Fiat 850 did when I had a glass-pack on it.
I might sell my house and two cars and buy one. Ha

Shhhhh…. It almost sounds like you are pining for a piece from The Booth Babe…
My old exhaust used to set off alarms driving by. Always brought a smile to my face. Yes I’m immature. Nice sound, Ferraris always sound like sex.
Heh… mine too. Mine wasn’t much more than pipe though, from the engine all the way to the back of the car. The first time this happened was starting up in a parking garage. The car parked next to me had one of the first talking alarms. I thought I could hear people talking over the sound of my car, but then I started to make out the words, “Step away from the car!” As soon as I realized it was a stupid alarm I thought, heheh, game on, vroom vroom. A few minutes and nine stories later as I exited the garage I could still hear that car alarm wailing away…
Good times.
I thought the squealing brakes were also pretty obnoxious. And I can’t wait to put a wiggly row of white LEDs inside my headlights. Schweet!
Interesting. Autocar got taken out in a new prototype Mclaren supercar and made the comment that they liked the sound of the Mclaren because after a year of driving, it would not start to annoy you by being overly intrusive, unlike the new ferrari they said….
Do you also buy a lawn mower based on how the noise will affect you if you use it as a daily driver?
I thought the all important test for us was seeing the parked PT Cruiser in Maranello.
aHahaha, American V8s seem so LAME……
Yes, but a HEMI is a hell of a lot cheaper and will last 200,000 miles.
