I think it is foreshadowing, possibly to soften the coming blow of potential future loss.
ie: CR-Z, Crosstour, Insight (2), Ridgeline, Hybrid Accord, Hybrid Civic, entire Acura line.
According to the late George Carlin, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.
Could be the glass has sprung a slow leak, too. Maybe, just maybe, Toyota & Honda’s days in the sun are over and they will better than no one else. The Koreans will wear the crown for a brief time, then who knows? GM will come back and grab 50% of the market again with the greatest automobiles the world has ever seen, Chevy alone, will again command 32% of the market as god intended. Olds and Pontiac will be resurrected to satisfy demand…wait a minute…it’s Monday morning…WAKE UP ZACK!…nice dreams of Impala SS, Malibu SS, Nova SS, Camaro SS, Cutlass 442’s, GTO’s…Gran Sports…Rivieras…………..
The Yen is pretty strong against the Dollar and Euro, which will be problematic for Honda, along with a ho-hum line up.
I hate to say it, but I’m afraid Honda has lost its “mojo” (for lack of a better term)!
I had to part ways with them five years ago, after a ‘monogamous’ relationship with Honda/Acura vehicles from the day I got my license! Walking away after 18 years was difficult, but lack of interesting products left me no other choice…..and into the waiting arms of Mazda! If Mazda screws up, I don’t know what I’ll end up driving….an ox cart maybe?
I did the same thing as you. My current Acura will be my last Honda. Crappy transmissions, fugly styling, and an increasingly unpleasant dealer experience, have turned me off to them. I like the oxcart idea. It is getting difficult to find a car company to love, isn’t it?
I was in the same boat. Honda’s lost its way and spent too much of its time on niche vehicles (hybrids, ngv, fuel cells, asimo, very light jet, etc.) while its volume sellers (Accord, Civic) were largely ignored the talents of its best engineers. I still own a Honda but its an ’89 that is my little toy.
That’s what I call “over reading” a news. Even the best of best companies won’t have an ever increasing quarterly earning.
If TTAC is the only news resource you have, you would probably believe that manual diesel turbo Saab wagons out sells Honda Accords 10 to 1.
I would scrounge a huge pile of retrieved aluminum cans from a multitude of dumpsters (even those on your turf, homey) to be able to buy a modern-day equivelent of a Plymouth Duster.
Same basic styling of the 1970-72 models but downsized to a certain extent to allow the use of a modern efficient 4-cylinder propulsion unit, front disc brakes, etc.
Minimalistically equipped to bring the cost as low as possible.
Even a 3-on-the-tree is allowable so 3 semi-broad beamed behemoths of today’s slender-challenged could cram into the front so there’s room for the cadaver in the rear (gotta’ have room in the back for outfitting the conveyance as a mobile shanty for dwelling purposes…. along with a removable rear seat backrest to allow full-length extension of a home-built platform for the foam mattress extending from the rearmost trunk area to the rear of the front seat….. a version of the “businessman’s model” of cars from the days of old when a car did not necessarily HAVE a rear seat.
Perhaps a super-duper option with a modern-day ultra-durable slant-six-type propulsion unit designed for ultra-durability costing extra but intended to last for decades; along with an ultra-durable tranny, whether manual or auto or both… whatever is designed to LAST!!!!
Of course have ample options the manufacturer can throw in to maximize selling price/profit but have the basic model for the growing number of working-poor in the USA.
We are multitude and our ranks grow exponentially!!!!!!!!!
Those few of us slightly above abject poverty may be able to own/operate a “sporty/fun-mobile” AND a second designed from the get-go as a “living in” vehicle to fore-go the need to convert a rear seat/trunk area into home.
obbop, it’s called Tata Nano.
Which doesn’t even sell in India. Get a second hand
@jaje
You can blame it on many things but a lack of brain power and resources ain’t it.
Their profits are still greater than that of Toyota or Nissan.
If I read one more person writing about Honda losing their “mojo” I’m going to set something on fire. Stop it already. The Yen is killing Honda, Toyota and Nissan right now and Honda is killing all of them in terms of profits and stock price.
