A news brief from the Agenzia Giornalistica Italia notes

AGI) Turin – FIAT CEO Sergio Marchionne has said that it is not true that FIAT is Americanizing its models, on the contrary, more than 50% of Chrysler parts “start off from a European basis”. Speaking at a press conference, Marchionne also emphasized that the “internationalization process has began, and is making progress and our engineering is too.” The CEO also said that, “it is totally absurd to say that an American car is not a Fiat product.”

Well I guess at least he’s not trying to hide anything, right?

So much for the “Imported from Detroit” slogan.  All we need now is for Chrysler to assemble these little Fiats in Mexico. And for those proud Chrysler fans who claim that Chrysler is still an American car maker…..  I’m sure Sergio would disagree, since he calls the shots from Italy.

“start off from a European basis”.

I all depends on what the meaning of basis is.

Can’t say that point of view disheartens me to tell the truth. I’m fascinated by the idea of a competitive lineup of small-ish cars entering the US from a new engineering source. The fix it again tony days were from before my time and anything that helps chip away at the sales lead of the usual suspects is a good thing in my book. Here’s hoping they run riot through Chevy, Toyota, Honda and Ford sales and leave the niche players unharmed, although I have little reason to believe that this is how it’ll go down.

I really do believe that the utter dominance of most segments by a few big players does more to fuel the “good enough to sell” mentality than the quality (or lack of) of any one brand’s managerial staff.
