Alex Dykes will may have another chance to review a Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG Coupé, the 2012 model this time. Although after the last review of a “halfhearted approach to a hotly contested and prestige-generating segment,” it wouldn’t surprise me if there would be a sudden shortage of the car when Alex shows up.
Mercedes Benz offers “driving dynamics at the highest level” in the new Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series, called “the most powerful C-Class of all time.” (See data below.) Also available is an AMG Track Package with “sports tyres and active rear-axle transmission cooling, plus the AMG Aerodynamics package including flics, a functionally tuned front splitter and an adjustable carbon-fibre rear aerofoil.“

In the meantime, there is one thing that is bugging me: Why in the world is a Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series all red?

For 100K, I would take the E63 instead because at the end of the day, this thing is still a C class.
Pricey for sure when compared to other sports cars in range. Most will probably be sold in middle east and US as the comfort level will be unmatched in class.
This car is ugly, the only beautiful cars Mercedes-Benz currently makes are the E-class coupe and the SLS.
My AMG is far from attractive , but that engine is pure beauty.
I don’t get why they didn’t wait for the new 5.5L Twin Turbo “63” engine with this car. It gives you no reason to buy this car when the turbo engine is just around the corner.
Same reason it’s in the SLS? Can still get a TT 3-series? Because they can?
I think Alex was spot on with his review. This black series has a slightly wider track which should make it a bit better through the twisty bits but I wouldn’t be surprised if an M3 still kicks its ass on a racetrack, particularly one with some decent corners.
Pretty much I think Mercedes should put in this kind of effort for the regular AMGs and offer it at prices competitive with regular M cars. As it stands now they offer too little for too much comparatively (IMO).
i think AMG have said they are sticking with the old port fuel injected V8 in the C class as “that’s what the consumer wants” and they want a low investment approach to the C class which is less profitable per unit than the bigger cars that will get the 5.5 v8
the n/a 6.2 is possibly has more ‘character’ than the new 5.5
I don’t quite get the Black Series in the context of the MB brand. It trades core Mercedes characteristics such as comfort and ride quality and trades them for more performance which can’t be used on most public roads.
This was particularly true for the Black Series SL which ended up losing it folding roof, usable seats and great ride but still wasn’t anywhere near a track car.
The “normal” AMG C class is really not short on power. What it needed was maybe a little more distinctive styling and a more up market interior. I doubt hard seats, a stiff ride and a 60% price hike was on most buyers wish list.
What it really needed was a chassis that could put the power down.
Anyway the regular C63 will still be available with the new interior so at least that’s an improvement. I guess if you want a compact sports sedan which makes a lovely noise and has a lot of straight line speed and acceleration, a C63 sedan might work for some.
It has worked for me for 12 years. I bet you drive a mini van.

True but I would have thought that an E63 Coupe would be higher on the priority list than a 100K C class.

you say that but the reality is that the AMG and their specials like the DR520 and all those track and ‘P31 enhancement’ packs sell quite well…

Huh? That press release may take an eternity to read, but shouldn’t the word be entirety?
“620 Nm at 500 rpm” – I thought this was way too low, so I double checked. Mercedes-amg.com says the torque peak occurs at 5,250 rpm
Interesting that they advertise the dry engine weight. Why is that important? Are they going to start advertising dry transmission weight next?
I guess any edge you have over the competition becomes fair marketing material.
