Back in April, I saw this car at Hyundai’s America Technical Center, but it was still heavily camouflaged and cameras were verboten. And unlike Hyundai’s other big 2012 Model-Year news, the wildly-improved “Grandeur” Azera replacement, we hadn’t seen photos of the updated GenCoupe leak out of Korea. Until now. Our man in Seoul, Walter Foreman, sent us these pics showing an updated Genesis Coupe sporting its own take the familiar familial fascia. Look for an official reveal at the LA Auto Show.

I actually like it. Much less generic and bolder than the current face. Does it have the new 2.0T engine from the Sonata and the updated 3.8 from the Genesis sedan behind it?
The V8 from the sedan would be a real treat, never mind the six.
I wonder if the reason for the higher nose is to make room for the V8 if they decide to go that route. A Type R Coupe with a turbo version of the 5.0 would be interesting. A Korean GTR.
I’ve heard that there will be “news on the turbo front,” which I assume means the new 2.0T. I’d be surprised if the revised 3.8 didn’t make it as well, but I haven’t heard any hints to that effect yet.
It needed a freshening. I admit I was hoping for more visual cues from the Genesis sedan (maybe a version of that grill?) but the Hyundai Hexagon is striking. I’m more curious about the droopy quarter windows.
Agreed. Given this styling, I’d imagine it’d be more aptly named the “Sonata Coupe” rather than “Genesis Coupe”.
Shouldn’t the Genesis coupe look more like a Genesis sedan than an Elantra? Maybe a name change is coming down the pipeline, too?
For some reason Hyundai thinks RWD is all the link the two models need to share a name. Why?
They were going to start up a separate marque for the two cars, like Lexus/Infiniti/Acura, called “Genesis”, but then the financial crisis happened right in the middle of that so there was no way they’d be able to launch a new dealer network. So instead both cars became “Hyundai Genesis” instead.
The sedan also needs more distinctive styling. More on that when I write up the R-Spec, probably for Wednesday.
Something has been bothering me about the new Hyundai corporate face, and these pics helped me figure it out. The surround trim extending from the grill makes it look like Jeremy Clarkson driving the Ariel Atom. It is more subtle on the Veloster, but here it is borderline comical.

It reminds me of the hybrid front end on the Sonata.
The Sonata Hybrid’s face is easily the worst of the bunch. Oddly proportioned, with a chrome mustache.
MUCH improved over the current Genesis Coupe front end which is too reminiscent of the Tiburon.
I’m going against the grain here but I don’t like the new front at all. The Gen Coupe is supposed to be a sports car, and the new grill is too blunt-nosed where the other one looked sleeker and pointier.
But then I thought the Tiburon looked pretty good too (it was the non-styling parts that weren’t too great on that one) so what do I know.
It looks like the winner of ‘worst body kit’ at an Import Nights show. Also reminds me of the eyelid-spreaders from “A Clockwork Orange.” Hideous.
+1, looks like a Veloster.
Far be it from me to quarrel with a Civic Si owner over what constitutes a “hideous body kit.”
I see I wasn’t the only one to see the irony of that statement.
Looks alright to me.
I’d rather see another 2 doors added to the Genesis Coupe, though.
Or, even better, a wagon/hatch!
Not sure if I like the revised front fascia; Hyundai overdid some elements of the front.
Based on the spy shots, the front of the Veloster turbo should look similar (which is more befitting the Veloster).
On the engine front, the GC will get the GDI 3.8 V6 and most likely a version of the 2.0T that is on the Sonata (tho there hasn’t been any confirmation of that).
The grill opening reminds me of a kid sticking his mouth on a window and blowing.
What is really needed to fix the Gen Coupe is to get rid of that silly sagging rear 3/4 window and to make it as a hatchback configuration. The turbo from the Sonata would be great as well. I think the new grill helps, the old one was tame for a sports car.
If only the designers had hawked the Elantra’s sleek front end. Unfortunately they went with the same gaping hexagonal opening normally found on Sonata Hybrids and blow-up dolls.
Why is it that distinctive has now become synonymous with ugly?
I’ll reserve judgement until I see it in person, but my initial impression is not that good. I hate that VAG has poisoned the front-end styling of so many new models by initiating that “aggressive” treatment that so many new models now feel they must copy.
They didn’t go goofy / gauche / sexy enough with it. It’s too much like the other Hyundais, without any extra hook. They spent all their creativity last year.
