There are people who wish that TTAC would just go away. This coming week, their dearest wishes will be fulfilled. My special friend in Moscow won’t have to send hate mail anymore: TTAC is finally going South.
Our intrepid leader Ed Niedermeyer, Steven Lang, the fastest mouth in the South, “lock-your-daughters-in-the-basement” Jack Baruth, and yours truly will go on a tour of turkey shoots, kudzu, and southern transplants. For me, it’s one of those strange trips where you arrive earlier than you depart (Beijing to Atlanta) and you nonetheless feel like a truck hit you.
We will post from en-route – if the Motel 8 has Internet. Y’all come back now, y’hea?

Are you swinging by the Kia West Point plant or the Hyundai Montgomery plant?
I have heard the tours at Hyundai Montgomery and Mercedes Vance are nice. I would love to visit Honda Lincoln where my Odyssey was made.
We’ve only got time for VW Chattanooga and Nissan in the Nashville area this time around. We’ll have to do the Alabama and South Carolina plants next time.
Chattanooga and Nashville?
You are going to have to change that photo!
That picture is definately from Arkansas, not Tennessee.
If in Nashville, TN you guys have to stop by the Lane Motor Museum. A low cost and high percentage weird car experience.
When MGs are the most mainstream brand of vehicle in the museum…
best picture ever.
Hover over it with the mouse ….
if you are in the Charlotte, NC area let me know!
I did…funny!!
Wow! I never knew my next door neighbors were so photogenic.
This sounds fantastic. I want pictures.
A group of journo’s get together to ‘cover’ a ‘story’ in a far off and bewildering place… Sounds like this trip will turn into Fear and Loathing in the deep South.
Sounds dangerous. Bring your hunting bow and listen for banjo.
Well, so long as Lang keeps you off the Chattahoochee River, you won’t have to worry about this:
Guess where our first stop will be?
I’m guessing Tallulah Gorge State Park?????
Or the Jack Daniels Distillery in Lynchburg, TN.
So are you gonna fly “Southern Air”? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSqtrjVbUA8
Interesting caption on the picture, visible when its blown up. The Maupins and the Shifflets are from central Virginia, west of Charlottesville around the Blue Ridge. If you drive the backroads around there, you will see any number of mailboxes with those names on them. Also the Omonhundros are big in that area.
Charlottesville, the home of “Mr. (Thomas) Jefferson’s University” (a/k/a the University of Virginia) and Thomas Jefferson’s “Monticello” residence although physically not far away, is light-years away socially and culturally.
I lived there. Rt. 810 north of Whitehall… After I married a DC socialite, we lived 2 driveways from Monticello.
Wow!
That reminds me, I have an LP album by the Ozark Mountain Daredevils from 1976, showing a photo of equally rural people titled “Men From Earth”. Google it to see what I mean!
Some folks clearly have it rougher than others. I’d be interested to know their ages at the time of this photo.
Ray Wert is going to get on you about your tracking and kerning again.
Isn’t Murilee coming for this ride?
