Yes, the usual suspects are crying foul about the Nissan Pathfinder moving back to a unibody crossover style platform. Who cares? I would love to see some data on the number of Pathfinder users taking their cars off-road, on anything more rugged than a gravel driveway.
Like the Infiniti JX, the Pathfinder will have three rows of seats, but Nissan did not announce powertrain details. Knowing Nissan, it will probably have some kind of VQ V6 and a CVT gearbox with an all-wheel drive setup. People taking their kids to and from soccer and ballet probably couldn’t care less.

Derek – such snark in two short paragraphs. Tsk tsk my brother. My wife has a 2008 Pathfinder SE and yes, believe it or not, we have taken it on numerous 4×4-access-only outings where Outbacks fear to tread. It has spent a fair amount of time in 4WD low – and taking our daughter to ballet classes as well, since you mentioned it.
People also tow thing with their SUVs. Will this new CUV Pathfinder have a 6000-7000 lb towing capacity like the current one? Is Nissan hoping that people will just spring for the Armada?
More future sales for Jeep and Dodge I guess.
On one hand, the Grand Cherokee and Durango are both unibody, but can still tow over 7000lbs properly equipped. On the other hand, who knows if Nissan wants to chase the new Explorer instead.
I think the percentage of (potential) customers who need to tow 5000+ lbs is minuscule. Nissan surely figures that they can get more customers elsewhere than they will lose among the heavy-towing crowd.
I wouldn’t use a CVT-equipped vehicle to tow anything heavier than a hot dog cart.
Pretty much a Quest with a snout?
Or perhaps a boxier Murano… I’m surprised Nissan hasn’t kept the original concept and simply limited sales to markets where such things are more popular, as they did with the Patrol.
Now, hand it over to the GTR guys, and ask them to do a long travel, Baja style version. That will be tough for Toyota and Jeep to follow with their more traditional, solid axle, higher COG entries. The Raptor sells like hotcakes, but is simply too big for most people.
A much cleaner design than what has become the norm from Nissan and Infiniti these days.
Can a reporter somewhere say it already…..
Is this Rebadge Galore?
Are the late 90’s Pathfinder/QX4 days returning?
How much are Pathfinder and the Infiniti JX sharing in sheetmetal?
When I first looked at the pic I thought it was a new Buick Enclave or something. Nissan has lost a lot of there styling distinctiveness lately.
What’s with the Hyundai crossover, circa 2009, swooping belt-line anyway? Does Nissan design even have a point of view anymore?
This is the first Nissan CUV I would consider. It looks good. But, I will only consider it if Consumer Reports gives it the all clear. Nissan has had reliability problems in the past.
FINALLY! The Pathfinder actually looks good again.
Is Xterra kept for now?
