You would think (and I secretly hoped) that Toyota would see the wisdom in handing me a corrupt-assed perk the same way Cadillac does MotorTrend randomly accepting my application to buy an FR-S, but NOOOOOOOOOOO! I’m “on the waitlist”. Did any TTACers make the cut? Speak up so I can ban your IP.

I got waitlisted too.
I didn’t try to sign up, but excellent animated gif.
…what was that saying? …Something about never buying a first year car?
Waitlisted here.
I was tempted, but I have to sit in one first.
Waitlist here
I haven’t heard anything. So either I secretly won and they are doing a secret background check before contacting me, or I didn’t enter my email address correctly. I’m betting on #2, though I was very careful.
(Goes back to checking email every 2-3 minutes…)
Call me crazy, but how exactly is this “winning” anything? Doesn’t it make a lot more sense to wait a few weeks so you can compare it to the BRZ price and options, instead of blindly buying the FRS and hoping you made the right decision? If you are worried about it selling out you can already go to any Scion dealer and put down a deposit. Unless they announce some special privileges for the “first 86,” it seems like they are just getting had by Scion.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but Aren’t they basically the same car? What is there to compare? It seems that what your really buying is a Toyota warranty and dealer network vs a Subaru warranty and dealer network.
Personally, I think the BRZ is the more attractive — the front quarter panel scallop forward of the side mirrors is more attractivly handled on the BRZ, and there doesn’t appear to be the weird nose/hood strakes on the BRZ like there are flowing off of the Scion logo on the FR-S, though I haven’t seen a closeup of that area on the BRZ yet.
From my experience, two Toyotas, one Subaru, I’d pick Subaru.
The Subaru will have slighly different spring rates, a nicer interior (soft touch dash on the limited model, etc) and probably a better options list.
I’m a Toyota fan, but after comparing pictures of the Scion and Subaru interiors I could never buy the Scion. I would also hate to have the cheap Scion logo on any of my cars.
I definitely prefer the HVAC controls of the Subaru, but neither brand caries any particular appeal or stigma for me. I’d probably take either of them. If Motor Trend is right about the production target being 3,000 cars a year, these things will end up costing buyers far more than the $25K that I’d be interested in spending.
Weirdly feels like being on the waiting list for a G&L Legacy …
Where’s the Beef Oren? NYC? Montreal?
It depends on your standards, the Rye bread has to be Montreal, the beef … well if you go Kosher it has to be NY, if not Schwartz in Montreal.
All joking aside, G&Ls are great guitars, some say that goofy fulcrum bridge is even better than that dumb two point they put on USA Strats …
But I’m a Callaham bridge guy myself …
And Baruth I believe is a Gibson guy ..
I must be on the wrong forum
I have a USA s500 Deluxe and the #1 or 74 ASAT Super.
For kosher deli meats, nothing beats Chicago’s Romanian. Even the guy who wrote Save The Deli says that the best deli meats are in the midwest.
Don’t know how their food was, but Boesky’s Deli in Detroit had two claims to fame: it was a hang-out for the Purple Gang and it’s owners we’re the parents of some guy named Ivan.
I have three G&L L-2000 basses and had an SB-1. Superb instruments. An ASAT is on my GAS-list.
Great basses, There was a run of pretty slick Legacys that were called the Fullerton line.
Hunting for one of them to solve the GAS
Just most g&L’s don’t get along with my rig
No word back as of yet.
It took a little reading to figure out that I didn’t make the cut, but they politely thanked me for my interest, and “successfully added [me] to the waitlist.” How exciting.
I didn’t put my name on the list but love the gif lol
I keep staring at it for minutes at a time. Strange, no?
I was waitlisted too. They’re compiling a list of “winners” on the FT86Club forums here: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3258
So this hoopla was to be ‘allowed’ to buy one of the first FR86’s? So you’re first in line to pay full price for a car that you’ll be able to stroll into a dealer in 6-9 months and (probably) pay less money?
Maybe I’m a grump old man, but seems like excessive hype. Even Nissan didn’t do this when the 350Z came out.
Is it a ‘game changer’?
Its the same mental trick used by eBay. Instead of buying something, you are winning something. In this case you are winning exclusivity for a few months. The price of being a fanatical early adopter.
9 months and pay less? Hah! Maybe in 1-3 years you’ll be able to get a naturally depreciated F86 on a used lot/classifieds but the first year is going to be a sell-out with obnoxious sales tactics. I’m not calling this car a game changer by any stretch but the first year run of these is going to be limited enough to keep the numbers low and demand high. On topic of that, cars like this never get incentives or discounts and I guess you’re assuming lease/trade-ins perhaps? Those will sell for practically sticker. I remember those early Miatas going for stupid crazy prices even coming off the first leases.
No dice here either… wait-listed.
If you want to get on a list that may eventually deliver, don’t forget that an order for a Maybach today will bring you a delivery in August!
For people who go tracking like most do here at Sanair, Mont Tremblant or Gilles Villeneuve ( there are A Lot of tracks around Montreal where you can cheaply race weekends ) the FR-S is making a lot of noise and is a game changer. I have an old 318ti that needs replacing so the FR-S as a daily driver with an extra set of rubber for Sanair is definitly in the plans.
The ultimate test of course will be to see if the baby seats fit …
I’m going to have to look into the possibility of some lapping this summer. Do you know the tracks’ requirements vis-à-vis rollbars on convertibles?
Haha, clearly they don’t follow TTAC. If Scion/Toyota PR has a pulse they will revise your status.
Anyone around here work for Scion? Now would be the time to forward on this post…
I bet half the people who “won” will bail for one reason or another. I am curious to know how many people applied.
waitlisted.
I’m sure this is a gimmick in part designed to help estimate demand.
Penske got in trouble with the whole Smart experiment by doing that. The approach allowed the distributor and investing dealers to misinterpret curiosity for interest…
Wait listed too… at least now I am not locked into color choice! I think I would like the Subaru version better anyway, I just thought it would be cool to get a chance to get one early…
I signed up for this gimmick and was chosen. I got an email this morning from Scion and then just got a call an hour ago from a rep named Clayton. Woop dee doo, I am allowed to preorder a car that I cant drive/assess before I purchase, sounds perfectly reasonable to me.
My Scion FR-S will be delivered to Power Nissan in Tempe Arizona, supposedly.
I am in the market to buy a car, but is it worth it to sell my turbo miata to purchase this Scion. Decisions…
You obviously didn’t read the agreement or faqs that went along with this “gimmick”. The agreement and facts state that you can back out any time, you can test drive the car before buying it and your $500 deposit will be refunded if you decide not to buy the car. I don’t know why I bothered to point this out since if you don’t go through with this “gimmick” a more deserving person on the waitlist would get the opportunity to enjoy the car.
its still a gimmick. If its not shite on a test drive, Ill buy one.
Jack, don’t ban him, talk turkey! Arizona is practically right next door to Ohio, it’ll be a pleasant drive home!!
Hahahaha…best comment in this thread yet.
Definitely keep the Miata – awesome car.
(Also – this will open up space for wait-listers)
@ randomguywithamazda
2 questions:
#1) When did you submit the request? At 9 am PST?
#2) Why is your FR-S being delivered to “Power Nissan”?
I’m more interested in you hairdresser car, myself. I’m planning FM Stage 2 suspension and butterfly brace on mine and am itching for boost. What engine management did you go with?
I highly recommend the Fat Cat Motorsports coilovers fwiw. I have a 97 C package.
This video makes me laugh every time I see it.
Actually Jackie boy if you want to deal, Im game.
However, note that I picked an Ultramarine 6spd, I think Im locked in to the exact combination of options. Ive signed the paperwork at the dealership and Im actually quite a bit excited about it, even if I just end up test driving it, not liking it, then backing out.
If I dont like it for whatever reason, I could just actually BUY the car, and sell it to you nice and legal for the exact out-the-door price from my dealership. Its a bit of hoop jumping, and may not be worth it in the end depending on how early this early release ends up being. But srsly, how can you say no to the prospect of an across-the-country roadtrip in a brand new car?
I’m unemployed and in nearby Colorado and reporting for livery duty!
I really can’t resist… with that said, however, I have had so much misery buying new cars from out-of-state dealers (a trick I’ve pulled six times in 15 years) that I’ve sworn never to do it again. Ohio is just screwed up in that case.
My reco: auction the car off on the boards :)
Damn!
I considered getting on the Leaf waiting list, but didn’t bother. My mild interest in that car far exceeds my interest in this Scion.
Didn’t even get an email back. Wasn’t very high on my radar anyways.
Waiting for my damned ND Miata coupe. If they disappoint, this may be the one.
