Indeed. I’ve only been here a week but the post about the Beijing show have been painful. I gave up on the other website after 8 or so years to come here. Now it seems I have two poor blogs to choose from.

Agreed. This is a new low, what an utterly pathetic article this is. This is supposed to be a car site.
One would have thought Bertel would have been aware of how wrong it is to make superficial value judgements on a person’s appearance.
Dear Mr. Bertel Schmitt;
I will begin by sharing that in the past 6 months I have, on a routinely basis, visited your site to either view the car reviews and/or read the informative news that you have provided your fan base.
However, having visited not only your site but also several others to include, Autoblog, Auto123, Edmunds etc. I have noticed that for some reason or another, you seem to be on a GM bashing rant. Having shared this, I should let you know that as of 2 months ago, I have been the proud owner of a new Verano, and truth be told if GM continues to produce cars like these they will definitely be on the way to success. The car is simply a fantastic car to own & drive and for the sake of knowledge I am in my very early 40’s.
So please move on with your bashing and write something that is truthful and fact based.
But the real reason, and only reason I am writing this, and the reason I registered in the 1st place, is to post a comment in this bit of nonsense that you wrote about the Chinese Girl with the ears. What where you thinking?
Have you got no shame? Are you racist or something?
With myself living in Vancouver, Canada, and being a white male and basically having many Asian friends I find your blog to be very rude and personally attacking to their cultural ethnicity. I happen to think she is quite pretty. But then again & after all is true what they say when they say “That Beauty Is In The Eye Of The Beholder”. So you could be just in what was written under the picture when you implied that “She is ready for take off”.
What I do ask Mr. Bertel is this. Have you taken a good hard look at yourself in the mirror? Maybe you should! And then when you do why don’t you post a picture of yourself and please take the time to state your faults with the way that you look. I would hope that you would post your faults openly so everyone that reads your posts can see what a douchebag that you are in writing what you wrote. Sir, with all due apologies you have reached the new low in automotive journalism.
FYI: Moving forward, I will never, ever read your site and/or even so remotely recommend it to anyone.

The author of this post is at the front of the pack for the Automotive ‘Journalist’ Jackass of the Year award. Mean-spirited, and a disservice to the other authors contributing to an otherwise high-quality website.
I ask myself what’s the motivation for someone to publish this ‘article’ on TTAC, and what that person would be like in real-life… Petty, angry, many other negatives I’ll not bother to dwell on. Certainly not someone I’d like to get to know.
PS: What’s with the ninja edit of the article? Adding a second pic of the ladies to somehow justify what you’ve said?

1) How many other sites that used to be better than they are now still regularly run the “Girls of X” show when they can’t find a Megan Fox movie to pimp?
2) How boring is the coverage of the Beijing Auto Show otherwise? I don’t care about gilded 300 or a rampaging Jeep Dragon. These aren’t even exciting. At least with the Japanese shows we get the native sense of quirky fun; here it’s all vulgarity.
That somebody has already used the word “misogyny” on this thread shows that there’s no sense of humor or perspective. Volkswagen could do far worse than a pretty face with an endearing imperfection.
The lady in Detroit had a gimpy leg and a lisp.

Why the negativity? Based on the 2nd pic’s caption “She is very popular” I thought it was an observation on the Chinese finding girls with prominent ears attractive.

The funny thing is, while the Japanese and many Europeans recognize this concept (try finding a well-dressed Frenchman who doesn’t have something out of place), it’s completely foreign to Americans.

This place has become the polar opposite of that site that used to be “obsessed with the cult of cars:” The content’s great but the comments blow.
People have forgotten that part of the charm of this place is that its writers popularized “flying vagina” to describe a Subaru grill.
I do have a sense of humor, but THIS? I visit TTAC because I like to read about angry guys bitching about cars, that’s plenty entertaining already. Lame-ass comments about car show models are for 12-year-olds. I would say this is more of an issue of poor content quality than it is about humor/non-humor.

Dunno how the post fits in with “obsessed with the cult of cars.” That’s why it’s such a facepalm, getting models to smile for the camera so you can ridicule them is the uniquely sad preserve of teen mags/daytime TV/tabloids, not TTAC…

I also find her cute. My take on this: I don’t think Bertel was trying to be mean-spirited. I think it was his whimsical way of expressing admiration for her looks. The cutesy throw-away title, “I’m All Ears”, doesn’t strike me as him trying to be cruel, just being silly is all. Of course, I’ve been wrong before…

Her ears aren’t that bad at all. A family friend, who isn’t bad looking at all, otherwise, insists on displaying her huge, chimplike ears at all times. She wears her hair very short, and you can’t miss them. The lobes are all stretched out from the gigantic heavy earrings she’s been wearing since she was about 10, and the rims are all lumpy, etc. They are almost always bright red too! I wish I had a pic of them to show them in all their horror. Her kids have told her they need to be covered up, her husband and others have told her they need to be covered up, and she thinks they’re kidding! Her daughter is a near clone, with much nicer ears and can pull off the short hair, but mom just can’t. At least she doesn’t have the “upside down” ears that a neighbor of mine does. They just need a little trimming on top to play a Vulcan.
That girl is adorable.
