Renault-Nissan is buying a majority stake in Russian automaker AvtoVaz. For those not in the Russian Car Appreciation Society, AvtoVaz is the maker of Lada cars.
Current owner (and weapons maker) Russian Technologies will enter a joint-venture with Renault-Nissan as a means of structuring the deal. Renault-Nissan will own 67.13 percent of the JV, which will in turn have a 74.5 percent stake of AvtoVaz. Following the necessary due diligence, the deal is expected to be completed in 2014.

Smart move. Don’t really know, but I guess Lada has some cachet in that part of the world. Guess there’ll be a Lada Logan soon.
Why stop at Lada Logan? How about a Lada GT-R?
“In Soviet Russia, Godzilla drives YOU!”
That would be really cool. Guess some Russian oil millionaires would go for that!
Not surprising. Lada needed an influx of good engineering badly. Hopefully they’ll finally abandon everything based on Fiat 124 and start making completely modern vehicles so one day the phrase “I drive a Lada” doesn’t sound like a self-condemnation.
I’d kind of like them to modernize the existing design, myself.
I was thinking the same thing..Put some modern mechanicals in, some safety figures and voilà! A very interesting design.
Or probably I’m just getting old.
“Or probably I’m just getting old.”
Yup. Me too, though.
How would you modernize the existing design? It’s fundamentally archaic.
It’d be like updating the Panther. (poke, poke)
Put in modern mechanicals! The design I’d leave pretty much alone. Don’t know if it’d be possible to do so. If there’s space in the engine pay for example. Or if you could fit airbags in the steering somewhere. But I was just commenting on the design. To these tired eyes, it looks pretty good :)
So, a Mini Cooper/New Beetle take on the 2106? That would be kind of awesome…
You get it comrade!
That’s actually a 2103 in the picture, not the 2106.
Me and seven friends took our rigid long forked Harley choppers for a ride in Russia last summer. There I saw some Volga Siber (Sebring).
I’m thinking that Sergio will have a cool retro surprise for us in a couple of years. Cinquecento, ok, why not a 124?
So, when can we expect Lada Nivas here in the US?
