The newly announced GX class for Grand-Am racing will allow alternative fuel engines to race in one of North America’s premier sports car series, and Mazda plans on jumping into things with their own Skyactiv-D diesel engine.
Of course, we have no idea what kind of car this engine will go into, regardless of whether it’s a street car or a race car. We can’t really see a diesel CX-5 race car tearing up the track. A new Mazda6 may be a possibility. God forbid it winds up being a Miata.

Probably the only way we’ll ever see this engine in the US.
Rumored to be the delete-option engine in Wuling’s forthcoming Grand National-branded GNX 3-wheeled delivery vehicle.
I wouldn’t entirely rule out diesels as racing engines. I remember watching the Seat Leon TDI’s in the World Touring Car Championship, and I was impressed by it’s acceleration out of every corner. Flat out on the straights it tended to suffer, and it was a little more nose heavy in the corners, but the sheer torque the motor put out helped them win many battles coming out of corners.
Edit, nevermind, I see it’s a series turbo setup when I zoomed in.
A Diesel in a Miata?! One can only hope! Especially if they offer a shooting brake…and brown color!
Skyactiv-D in an MX-5 hardtop body modeled after the M Coupe. That’s right: a diesel wagon Miata.nit will only be available with a 6MT, and only come in brown.
I’d buy it. The only thing I dislike about my first gen is the fact it’s a convertible.
Diesels and DI gassers are sort of meeting in the middle technology wise. Not too difficult to picture a diesel Miata at all.
Miata with a 4K redline?
The standard Sky-D engine has a 5200 redline. I don’t know about this version.
My understanding is that this is running in an advanced green technology class. So don’t look for it to be leading the field. How it does against others in it’s class has me very very curious though.
Only if this engine is offered with a “Jake Brake” !!
I would bet money on it being in a Mazda 3 …they are already racing MazdaSpeed 3s …
