Looks like the reign of the Cadillac CTS-V Wagon is over; there’s a new product in town to let auto journalists flaunt their love of obscure cars with the Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake. Mechanically, it’s the same thing as a CLS63, but with a wagon body style. It will sell in small numbers to eccentric wealthy types. They will likely make a brown one just to pander to those whose self-worth comes from one-upping people regarding arcane automotive knowledge. I still want one.

well, MB is doing their damndest to make the CTS wagon look beautifully designed…
Will this be built in Alabama alongside the regular C-class models after the switchover?
If I can get it with 4WD, diesel, a stick shift and wind up windows, I’ll buy one blah blah blah….
While we’re at it, under $20k.
Totally doable if they took all that electronic nanny stuff and ridiculous government mandated safety stuff out.
Derek, with all due-respect, is there really a need to take a snarky pot-shot, disguised as clever writing, at wagon lovers with every 2nd article you write? I know the wagon/diesel/manual demands of some people gets stale, but so does your constant need to bring it up.
I think the answer is an emphatic “yes”.
I couldn’t disagree more; There is nothing stale about this brand of fanboy abuse! Please Derek, pile on!
+1 trash talking about those who talk trash is highly appreciated. Maybe the diesel 6mt station guys can form a wine club too, their whine club is quite active. Still haven’t seen rows of station wagons at any dealer.
He’s dissing MB’s recent thing with the brown E63 press wagon
With credit, Nostra, I had the same thought on first reading – this line of joking cynicism is getting a little stale.
However, Derek did admit he wants one, so I can forgive.
Well the thing is, I put my money where my mouth is(n’t). I OWN a wagon with a 5-speed manual!
So now we know what a MB hearse looks like.
You know it’s bad when the A7 is better
This is either slap-me-in-the-face ugly or radiantly beautiful, I can’t decide. But I want one.
I thought that the definition of a shooting brake was 2 doors (not counting hatch)?
It is, but then the definition of a coupe’ was 2 doors but that doesn’t stop them from marketing the CLS as a “4 door coupe”
The side profile looks like a giant stepped on a last-gen Honda CRV.
Aside from appearing to have enough blind spots to make a Camaro look like a BMW 2002, I like it. I certainly wouldn’t kick it out of bed… er, garage.
Last i heard it wasn’t coming to the US
As a 9-5 sportcombi owner, somebody please euthanize this
The 9-5 cargo capacity is more than the V and the CLS wagons. Add JZW stg 4 and pass them at the pump!
No sir, I don’t like it.
Ugly….just like all current MB styling. The loudspeakers at MB design studio have been playing “I think I’m turning Japanese” for a few years now. Maybe that’s their largest customer base? CTS-V is gorgeous compared to this.
“CTS-V is gorgeous compared to this”
That’s saying something.
I don’t think there is enough attention being paid to the fact that this is a WAGON, not a shooting brake. How much farther can they take this “4 door coupe” marketing bullcrap?
I like it, but I don’t think I would buy one. I currently drive an E class wagon. This is the same car, with some of the practicality removed, for additional cost.
Very clever marketing – paying more, getting less. It’s been going on for a long time (particularly with the Germans) Part of the reason you have a wagon (even a Mercedes) is that you can fill the back with crap and take it to the dump or collect something bulky from the hardware store. It’s not going to happen in this car.
