Good news for Canada’s manufacturing sector; GM has confirmed plans to add a third shift to the Oshawa Flex Line to help meet demand for the 2014 Chevrolet Impala.
An article in the Windsor Star confirmed the move, as well as the retention of one shift at the Oshawa Consolidated Line, which gets a stay of execution until June, 2014. GM’s St. Catharines, Ontario transmission plant, will also get a third shift to produce six-speed gearboxes.
Under their new agreement with the CAW, GM has promised to maintain the current level employment with its 7,000 CAW workers, and invest $675 million into their Canadian operations. The exact terms of the deal are a secret, but this is a promising start if nothing else.

The hope is, that the consolidated plant will keep afternoons on for a little longer than expected.
Good news – I seem to remember that this was GM’s best plants, or one of their best, for assembly and product quality.
Isn’t this where all the W-bodies were coming from?
@APaGttH The W Pontiac, Chev, and Buick, all were produced in Oshawa 1 or 2.
Your right, this is good news we’re starting to see some positive “ripple effect” The Ontario economy needs a strong auto industry.
“To meet demand”, I like that. That’s a good reason.
and they haven’t sold one 2014 Impala….yet. I guess they’re filling up the pipeline and stocks at the dealers.
That’s what I’m wondering. Is the “demand” based on dealer orders? (i.e. dealers are ordering more Impalers than expected)
Right, I was going to say; “Hey have they released the new 2014 Impala yet? I haven’t seen one and the W-body Impala is pretty thick around here.”
I was wondering the same thing, @tced2.
This car looks promising and might easily sell at 3x to 6x the rate that the 2010-2012 Taurus ever has.
Yep, rental fleets need cars.
Mikey, I hope they keep the consolidated plant running through Christmas. Through Christmas might seem silly to some, but it has a huge psychological benefit with people able to buy gifts.
Generic question. Does keeping the lines running have anything to with X amount of production must be done in Canada due to the Canadian bailout?
@el scotta..To answer your question, yes. I think the figure is around 16 percent of total production.
That car in the pic has a very ugly nose. Was it in a wreck? If they haven’t sold any yet, I wonder where the demand is coming from. Maybe governments? Is my US Federal Tax money going to a Canadian bailout?
It’s wrong for any manufacturer to be calling anything a “2014 Model Year” when it’s not even 2013 yet. Unless Canada really is that far ahead of us in the US.
“Is my US Federal Tax money going to a Canadian bailout?”
No, it’s the other way round. We Canadians put in 20% of the initial bailout equity of GM, despite being only 10% of the market size. Today, we hold 9% of GM equity, the US government holds 26%.
We’re subsidizing you lot by a great amount on a per capita basis.
Mexico, the third member of NAFTA, put in precisely zero, and seems to reap the majority of benefits.
Funny…a story centered around the Impala and Zackman has yet to weigh in. LOL!!
He’s probably out breaking in his new one and hasn’t seen the posting yet…
LOL!
I thought these were eventually going rear drive?
CAFE fixed that. Bob Lutz said so in 2009.
Promised jobs? Sure, as long as there are customers.
I’d love that myself! I think I’ll ask my boss for that on Monday…
“I thought RWD?” It’s been in the news for over a year. Not always what you “think”.
Also, the offical first day to sell 2014 model year cars is Jan 2nd, less than 3 months from today. So, yes, they are gearing up for the ’14 Impala
as Mario implied I am inspired that people able to profit $6958 in 1 month on the computer. did you see this website http://Buzz21.com
Take your spam elsewhere, idiot.
I’m thinking that in early 2014 I will buy one of the (heavily discounted) leftover 2013s for CHEAP, hopefully get the $1,000 rebate for owning GM cars currently and THEN use my GM card earnings (I have the last generation card, which allows me to redeem the full amount-no cap!). I love buying new cars in full with $10,000 cash in hand. I take meticulous care and drive them until they die, so why not?!
