The YouTube videos of the meteorite attack on Russia’s Chelyabinsk region come to you courtesy of a new custom. More and more Russian drivers have a video camera on the dash.
The usually Chinese-made units are on Russian dashs in growing numbers “to provide exonerating evidence after an accident, or to convict a corrupt traffic cop,” writes Der Spiegel.
According to Reuters, “more than 500 people were injured when a meteorite shot across the sky and exploded over central Russia on Friday, sending fireballs crashing to Earth, shattering windows and damaging buildings.”
Keep those dashcams running: Tonight, asteroid 2012 DA14 “skims closer to our planet than any other known asteroid,” writes the Guardian.

Very, very cool. Who says cameras everywhere are such a bad thing?!
Saw this as breaking news last night. Some of the videos are amazing. Oh, and Yulia Shapovalova of RT TV? Gigitty gigitty gigitty!!! That is one smoking hot newscaster.
I had a dashcam imported from Russia. The U.S. market dashcams completely suck for automotive application. Most are repurposed extreme sports cameras. There would be nothing wrong with that if only their makers bothered to add automotive features, such as accident snapshots that save historic video from overwriting. In contrast, Russians enjoy a large array of competitive dashcams.
Where I live, taking pictures of cops will get you arrested, assaulted, killed or all of the above.
I used to live in Maryland but I left a while ago.
Support your local police: beat yourself up!
They’re not just to catch corrupt cops, there are plenty of corrupt civilians too — criminals, scam artists, bad drivers, etc. There’s any number of reasons Russian drivers need to back up their point of view of events.
Agreed, I think the lack of a competitive dash cam market is a pretty good trade off compared to all the Russian hijinks that we regularly see.
Besides, I I’d hate to see what would happen in the US as we are a nation of tattle-telling busy bodies hell bent on telling everybody else how they should live.

So you don’t live in a HOA then?
ObTopic: I’m surprised Russian cars don’t have multiple cams integrated as an option..
Aren’t Russian courts just as corrupt?
What real good is this video evidence?
Yes, the Russian judges are corrupt, but unlike their American counterparts, the bad behavior of Russian judges is mitigated by fear.
If someone walks into a Russian court with proof that they were not misbehaving, and are screwed over anyway….common in American courts….no one will care when that Russian judge is ventalated by 7.62X39 rounds.
For all the guns and tough talk, Americans are the biggest cowards in the world when it comes to standing up to corrupt authority types.
“Americans are the biggest cowards in the world…”
Well, to be fair, we’ve had better nutrition for decades than most cowards elsewhere. Until recently, anyway.
so the Russian solution to corruption is murder?
And yet you call Americans cowards?
@Summicron: biggest chuckle I’ve had today so far. Thanks.

Heh… I’ve been re-reading Catch-22. Heller’s looney satire can inspire even a sluggish brain like mine. :-)
If you understand Russian or your boss does, video 1 and 3 have NSFW language.
I have read and see that the russian use car camera to catch people walking who try to fraud driver with fake collision.
