The YouTube videos of the meteorite attack on Russia’s Chelyabinsk region come to you courtesy of a new custom. More and more Russian drivers have a video camera on the dash.

The usually Chinese-made units are on Russian dashs in growing numbers “to provide exonerating evidence after an accident, or to convict a corrupt traffic cop,” writes Der Spiegel.

According to Reuters, “more than 500 people were injured when a meteorite shot across the sky and exploded over central Russia on Friday, sending fireballs crashing to Earth, shattering windows and damaging buildings.”

Keep those dashcams running: Tonight, asteroid 2012 DA14 “skims closer to our planet than any other known asteroid,” writes the Guardian.
