The 2014 Cherokee could be the first Jeep produced in China in nearly 6 years. Jeep CEO Mike Manley said that the Cherokee was an “obvious choice” for local production, as Jeep looks to expand its customer base in China.
Manley noted that the Cherokee could double Jeep’s current 46,000 unit sales. Local production would allow Jeep to avoid import tariffs on the new model, which according to Jeep, has proved overwhelmingly popular in consumer clinics. Currently, the Compass accounts for just over 70 percent of Jeep sales in the country.

Didn’t they already go there?
Didn’t they already do that?
Didn’t they already get burned?
Jeep has been producing in China since it was AMC. It shut down in 2009 because financial problems with Chrysler. Jeep has since found a new China partner and should resume production there by mid 2014
Well, not exactly. What actually happened was that Daimler took over what Chrysler had inherited when they bought AMC. Beijing Benz (as it’s now called) began producing Mercedes.
Chrysler never willingly stopped making Jeeps there; Daimler bought a way into the Chinese market and then removed Chrysler from it.

Thanks for those details, I didn’t know this
Isn’t a Chinese company still building jeep-like wagons using the old 1980s Cherokee tooling? I seem to remember Bertel running an article about it.
Beijing Jeep Corporation was building the XJ (Old Cherokee body) up until 2005
It’ll be different this time.
…they hope so
I can’t see where it will make any difference in quality since jeep products have very little quality no matter where it’s made.I bought 3 new jeeps since 01,and they will never get another dime of my money.
…and I’ve had great luck with Jeeps
I’m a big Jeep fan from way back, but I just can’t get past the front end of the new Cherokee.
If they only produced that style in China, and something better/different here, I’d be OK with that.
The new Cherokee kind of looks like a Chinese dragon. So if you put hydraulics under a Cherokee and make it dance, can it scare away evil spirits?

No one in America will get one of these. They are only for Chinese consumption.
If if everything pans out as proposed, I plan on getting one because it’s exactly the kind of vehicle I need
