Just before it makes its debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show, Jaguar’s C-X17 concept shows its undisguised face. To the Jag faithful, this is as scandalous as bare ankles would be in Taliban-era Kabul. We’ll be waiting for the full picture before launch any damning “Avoidable Contact” fatwas.

I don’t want to be a piss but God I wish this trend would die.
Encore! Encore! Encore!
I don’t recall Jag ever produced a SUV or CUV since their inception.
Hence why it’s scandalous to the Jag-faithful.
I think that this is ridiculous for a Jaguar—especially with Land Rover sitting right there. But I’m sure people has a similar reaction when BMW announced the first X5 (which, ironically, had some engineering help from Land Rover). Nevertheless, if Jaguar goes through with this, it needs to be decidedly more car-like than even the Range Rover Evoque. To avoid cannibalizing said Evoque’s sales, it should come with standard FWD, and maybe have an optional AWD system that is less capable than the Evoque’s.
Could we send a note to all the car companies telling them there is no need to make their utes and trucks resemble their cars? Seems the most successful truck sellers of all time did not follow that convention.
The obscenely stubby beltline proportions on the XJ were already 9/10 of the way to a crossover so they may as well finish the job.
Jaguar Land Rover Automotive PLC is the name of the company. I’m just saying…
Yes sir, I comprehend. I’m simply referring to SUV/CUV badged as a Jaguar. I guess they are seeing what x5 & Cayenne are doing to their German counterparts’ bottom line & deciding to take a plunge into SUV/CUV craze.
My point was meant to be that they have a brand that makes a much better home for CUVs. LR has a design language that resonates with the hopelessly naive. I don’t think the problem with Jaguar is that they make GTs and sedans. The problem is that they aren’t very good. They should try to be better at what they should be able to do competently and leave the CUV segment to the brand that can sell a Ford Focus in tacky cross-over drag for $50K.
Not too bad.
But what about those ridiculous lower intakes?
My 2000 XJ8 has intakes to the brakes. They are are discreet.
Dan
Apparently, ‘discreet’ is out, along with ‘elegant’, ‘understated’ and ‘classy’. Premium cars/crossovers must now have ‘pizzazz’. Can ‘chutzpah’ be far behind?
It’s in already, the parking lot of my temple was full of Land Rover/Range Rover products. The landau roof’d Deville and RS4 made up for it.
This thing SO needs an Edsel grille.
So basically almost exactly as I predicted, except it has XJ lamps instead of XF lamps.
I love the big huge intakes which are not in a useful location. Not.
I think the XJ is a gorgeous car, and this looks very similar, so far so good. I will with hold judgment until I see the butt. If they don’t get the butt right, this will hurt to look at. Remember the rear end is the difference between and X5 and an X6.
A friend of mine says that’s the difference between Venus and Serena Williams too.
I was really excited to see what Jag’s interpretation of a SUV would look like…well, this has made me realize that there is no way Grace, Space and Pace would all work in an SUV/CUV – specifically the Grace part..
That being said, if they want to go the Porsche way & produce more cars to increase their bottomline so that they can keep producing cars like the current-gen XF and XJ, then I am definitely all for it!
When your neighbor/friend has a Porsche this will do very nicely.
I’ve just seen this car from the side on autocar and it blows me away. This will destroy x3 sales its stunning
looks kind of Jeep Cherokeeish or could be a cat sans whiskers. I wish automobile manufacturers could put head and tail light units in their vehicles that don’t fade, scratch, get destroyed by car washes and cost
$800+ to replace. Will this chip into Evogue sales? Seems like a curious choice for Jaguar.
Wait, I thought that was the new XC90?
