With Nissan product boss Andy Palmer confirming that the IDx concept car will go into production, the auto world is rejoicing over the prospect of another affordable sports car. But Palmer also let slip some interesting news about the next Z, which will also see a reduction in engine size.
According to Autocar, the next Z will have a downsized turbocharged engine, likely a 4-cylinder, though Palmer didn’t discount a V6 powered Nismo variant. Hopefully we’ll see get a reduction in curb weight and footprint as well, wearing the historic badge but transitioning into the S16 Silvia that never was.

Hopefully with a manual option!
But with auto rev-match?
The iDx Concept is a seriously cool looking car. Would love to see a production version.
The only thing I immediately thought of: it’s a new model with a smaller engine, so this is probably the last generation where model name will correspond with engine size (i.e. 370Z = 3.7L V6).
Imagine a 3.0L V6 with more power than the current 3.7L; is the marketing department going to call it a 300Z? Probably not.
Call the turbo a “ZX”. Return of the 300ZX!
Getting rid of the ZX nomenclature was one of the lamest things Nissan ever did IMO.
Granted, I’ve never liked the 350Z (too round for me) and I’d rather someone mess around with a time machine and get me a brand new 280ZX…
Whatever old concept that is up there, I hate it.
I thought it was some chinese knock off of a Porsche 928
Looks like an S14 with a bad body kit.
Looks like it was exposed to a fire that burned the skin off its nose.
I believe that was the concept that came before the 350Z
Caltemus is correct, that was the ‘Z’ concept from ’99 I think? Not 100% on the year but it indeed came after Nissan killed off the 300ZX and before the 350Z launched. It was meant to echo the S30 Datsun 240Z/Nissan Fairlady Z, this one even had a 2.4 I6 to move it.
I remember that from NAIAS years back. I seem to remember there was a real 240Z in the same color parked next to it.
Actually, it had a 4 cylinder engine. As a member of a Z car club, I participated in a survey of the car. I don’t think they received many positive reviews.
Ahhh…. oops. Knew it was some sort of 2.4, thought I read somewhere it was a 6, but a 4? Yuck that’d be a KA24DE then. Imagine if they really released this with a KA engine….. and that engine wasn’t received too well in our S-chassis cars! Imagine the uproar if they did!
It looks like a fish.
Bleh… a 4 cylinder Z? Just bring back the SX.
Z sales have been way down, but IMO it’s better to let the name retire on a high note than cheapen it out. I’m so god damn tired of turbo 4 banger motors with their soulless exhaust notes and wheezy top ends. No thanks. No V6, no Z.
Look like a 90’s Celica.
Nobody here recognizes it’s the old concept that led to the 350Z from about 1998?
I would buy a production IDX. And I mean new, from a dealer.
A 4-cylinder Z I can handle. The original Fairlady was, so it would fit. Doing the Z as a two -seat SWB version of the IDX with a variant of the Juke motor is probably the easiest path to being commercially viable.
Thanks Sushi – I was a little dismayed that a dozen comments in and no one recognized it (or at least didn’t point that out).
As a 370Z owner, I’ve been watching Nissan’s announcements like a hawk for clues about the next Z, or if it even exists. I’m not adamantly against a turbo-four Z; a nice weight drop would also go a long way in livening things up. It’ll be interesting to see where they take it next.
Yeah, I remember R&T nearly having an orgasm in print over that car. I don’t think I ever saw lobbying quite that intense from a magazine for a car to be built.
I’ll be at the dealer day 1 as well.
this checks all the boxes for me. inline turbo 4, rwd. something just so right about it.
As a 350Z owner I’d be fine with a turbo 4, as long as the weight dropped so the car’s performance (0-60) was the same. Given the power the manufacturers are getting out of turbo 4s the engine could push 320 HP. My ’03 Z has 30 less then that!
Also the hatch configuration must stay! I don’t want anything like the IDx (Silvia).
The concept is the pict that goes with this article was the forerunner to the 350Z. My car is that exact same color: LeMans Sunset.
I was 9 in 98. It’s too bad it’s an old concept I quite like the looks of it.
Yes and of course it will have a wonderful CVT….
That 1999 Concept Z looks so old, that I in turn, feel old.
Four cylinder turbo Z vs Four cylinder turbo Mustang!
That’s what the prognosticators thought sports cars of the new century would be like in 1990.
FWD turbocharged Mustang I’m guessing?
Even has some Lotus Europa genetics in the nose cone?
If they don’t change the IDx body much from the concept, and have a stick, I am IN! The most exciting thing from Nissan since 2002 Sentra SE-R
I’m not that big of a 350z-370z fan but I do recognize that concept as an early 350z rendition, mercifully the final product looked better, but as with too many “updates” and “face lifts”then they ruined the purity with the 370z.
I’m not looking forward to the idx, I’ve read Nissans entire press release and I’m clearly not one of the tech-savvy non-existant millennial hipster people things that they’re targeting.
Plus, if I want sports car from Nissan I’ll pick up a 370z.
I too will be chomping at the bit for this one. HURRY UP NISSAN.
This car is a very good idea ! .. (nowadays, every sports-car form Japan is a good idea.. ! .. because they have no balls anymore to produce sth ‘sporty’ (..yeah, ok.. Nissan with it’s GTR and 370Z is an acception ..)
…
.. but this car would need cool-design and at least 250bhp (..not to make the same mistake that Toyota did with their ‘Toyobaru-twins’ (..I heavent’t read or watch FRS,BRZ-test without mentioning that it’s
..underpowered !!! …
